I have one of those, exact same brand by the look of it. Works great for me. I think I paid a bit more though. Oh well

Yep, a noisy fan. Sorry. I suppose you could just unplug the fan, dunno why its needed anyway.

They also have this at Computer Geeks for the same price. I ordered this and a 9.5 foot USB 2.0 cable for an additional $.75.
Mine is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

I got this message when I bought a ADS external case. The drivers were not happy with XP. Here was the message I got on install.

Continuing your installation of the software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system, either immediatly or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this instalation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed the windows logo.

How do I know, if this case mentioned for sale....will be happy with my toshiba laptop, xp, its a month old

Or the one from CompGeeks ?

Well pilgrim, all that mean is they didn't pay $$$$$$$$$$ to microsoft so MS didn't give them the code to bypass that message. I plug a lot of my crab with that stupid message showing up. But XP also have a go back thing that I read somewhere, so I think I am save. But I never had to use that go back thing before and most if not all of new hardware I install give that message.

I bought the one from Computer Geeks. Put a 30G Maxtor 7200 hard drive in it.
Plug and play with Win XP Pro. No driver required. Recognized as Mass Storage Device.
Wanted to use it with Ghost 2003 for cloning exact same drive in my Dell 8250.
Cannot get Ghost to clone, either in Windoz or from floppy. With floppy boot, Ghost will
find and identify the drive on boot-up with the supplied USB 2.0 drivers, but it cannot assign a drive
letter to it and does see the drive after the Ghost window appears.
I had hoped to use it as an external backup. Symatech has answered two emails, but have
not come up with a fix.

Madthumbs, I went to that websight you give and search for words "usb enclosure". The first 2 was around $30s and it is only 2.5" so that isn't it. The one that I see similar to this is $47.

This have an option of putting in a CDRW or DVD and stuff too. Size is 5.25"

TTM77:

When you order something from Computer Geeks, they list several related items on the bottom of the page that they will give you a discount on if ordered at the same time. Their regular price for the 9.5 ft 2.0 USB cable was $.95, but with the discount it is only $.75.

My order was $39.95 + $.75 + $7 shipping for $47.70 total.

I have an 80G Maxtor drive in this case and it works fine. The fan is noisy on start-up and then quiets down, though you can still here it if you are in quiet room. Compgeeks had a USB 1 case for $24 in their last e-mail newsletter: it looks exatly like a Buslink without the name, same color, design, stackable, NO FAN-the case acts as the heatsink.

I bought this one, and finally had time to install my CDRW in it this weekend. No drivers needed for me, just plugged and played on XP w/ SP1. I can turn the enclosure's power on and off, unplug the cord, whatever, and XP acts like this is all nothing new -- ho hum...

On the compgeeks site it says "Supports up to 128GB Hard Drives". Why wouldn't it support a 200GB HD. Doesn't this depend on the MB bios and OS?

Same here but for some reason it doesn't show up on the tree in Explorer. Shows up in Disk Management and can view/open it from there but a no-show in Explorer.

Is PCMCIA as fast as USB 2.0? That is, if I use a USB 2.0 card on my laptop, will I be able to fully utilize a 48x CDRW with this enclosure? If not, what is the maximum rate that you can burn at with PCMCIA?
