USB 2.0 info?

Can someone hook me up with a site that has CURRENT USB 2.0 info? I see that the new MSI K7T266 Pro motherboard will have this. I want to find out if the upgrade from USB 1.1 to 2.0 can be done through firmware upgrade or does it have to be done only with Hardware and older motherboards won't be able to be upgraded.

I seriously doubt it could be done anyway other than hardware, considering the changes, but I could be wrong.

it's a hardware upgrade! older boards will be able to use the technology in the form of a usb 2 pci card!

USB is totally backwards and forwards compatible, the plugs are the same and the speed difference theoretically is 40 or 20 fold (I forgot).
this means you could use your current USB 1 device on USB2.0 without any problem, it justs neede a software update. vice versa, you can plug your USB2 devices on USB1 port, but it would not benefit from the wider bandwidth or higher speed.

I've been trying to verify the concept of networking in USB 2.0. I read somewhere that it was going to support direct computer to computer plugging via the ports to network, w/out any adapters. Anyone care to comment?

andylawcc, do you mean to say that all of my USB 1.x devices will be able to achieve USB 2.0 speeds with a driver update, or they will need driver updates regardless and will still max out at USB 1.x speed?

no, AFAIK, USB 1.X device will work in a USB 2.0 port, but will NOT get the speed advantage... and on the the other hand, any USB 2.0 device will work in a USB 1.X port, but also will not get the speed advantage.

and plug and port are exactly the same... that's why its so sweet. (how to differentiate them though... must read usb.org then...)

No no....it's like ATA33 and ATA66.

It's completely compatible but to get the 66MB/s speed you need both the device and host to support it. If either end is ATA33 you get reduced to ATA33.

It's the same with USB 2.0 and 1.1. 1.1 devices will work on a USB 2.0 host and 2.0 devices will work on a 1.1 host, but unless both device & host are 2.0 you get 1.1 speeds.

Yeah, I went through the 2.0 spec pdf shortly after posting and found the same thing.
