Great if you just want to add more usb 2.0 ports including your 2 port or 4 port on your mobo. One of my k7vta3 ECS mobo is defective and only fuction as usb 1.1 and will lockup everytime I manually update the driver to enhanced usb control vs the default USB control aka Universal Serial Bus
The key for 2.0 is "enhanced"

I've seen the same thing sold at newegg for 24.95 plus 4.00 shipping, makes no sense

I've bought several time from them with NO problems at all.

Linky to $6.99 deal

A bug in their cookie? It didn't do this before this deal was posted.
Just make sure that what you order is the amount you want before you hit process order.
Don't shop at pcimicro.com because their products are of low quality even thought their ratings look good, you'll just be wasting hard earned dollars.

I think pcimicro and acortech are run by the same CEO
Website same style, most products are similar.
Everything have a rating of 5 stars but there is no one to rate it.
Its no wonder their are so many satisfied people thinking that the product is perfectly rated. Rating by who? By them of course my darling...
A 3.00 mouse gets 5 stars too, yeah right. Whatever it takes to sell?

If you are interested DVCentury.com has "8" port usb2.0 that I've used for 4 machines with no problems. It has 4 external ports and two internal and a 8 pin internal header. You can only use one or the other on the internal so a max of 6 useable. It requires a auxillary 4pin floppy-type power connection to it.

It is available here. I know their reseller ratings suck, but this is the only product I bought from them and had no problems, have to check upgrade to 8 ports for $.99 and click for free shipping, so $8.99 for the unit. Don't need drivers for xp.

I recommend them for when you lack mobo usb headers or when the usb headers on your old board are 1.1 and you can bracket off to usb2.0. The lighted usb cable is a bargain if you are into it - good quality. Hope this may also help for people who need a actual header.

edit to 8 pin internal header - sorry

Most people don't need this, this is only for the techie savy people like us who demand more out of our pc. For convenience... for versatality.. Me wonders why usb is only 480mbps rather then 1000mbps. 480mbps is like ATA48 between ata33 and ata66
Hell, if internet connection would be as fast as 10mbps bidirectional things on the internet would go so much smoother.

This is also true that most aren't technie like us, they just buy them already build, prebuild and wouldn't have a clue what's inside

Acortech = Pcimicro, now that's sneaky

newegg has the same Syba (Ali based) combo (USB2.0/Firewire) card for $20.50 + @ $5-$7 shipping.

I recall reading somewhere that the Ali based card used NEC for USB2.0 and Ali for Firewire.

I dont agree. I think everyone who uses any sort of digital camera needs a USB 2 interface to get the data off the card. Also anyone who uses an external USB drive, CD rom, DVD, hard drive, etc. It makes a HUGE differance going to usb 2 from usb 1 for any of those uses.

BTW, I bought one very similar to this last year. It might have been the same one. It was prett good. I like the idea of having an internal port because there's a lot of cardreaders that hook up to something like that.

From what I've read on various forums and spec sheets, NEC is the preferred USB2.0 chipset.

NEC OEM's to everyone.
So, you can get a relatively inexpensive card from a no-name manufacturer with an NEC chipset.

I've seen Ali and NEC on combo cards.

Combo cards featuring Via usually use VIA for both USB2.0 and Firewire.
That's just what I've found.

Most USB add-on cards include an internal port. I've only seen a few that offer an internal port AND an internal header.
Using one usually disables the other.
It allows more flexibility as MOBOs with 1.1 headers often include a rear slot bracket to connect to the header.

Note an engineer friend of mine has used cards with various USB2.0 and Firewire chipsets and he's never noticed a difference.
Maybe he's been lucky or maybe there's no great difference.

If you're getting an external firewire enclosure, it seems that everyone agrees that the best chipset (in the enclosure) is the Oxford 911.
However, it costs much more than any other chipset.
I digress, this thread is about the cards and not enclosures.

I was all set to get a combo card from newegg but this deal looks too good to pass up.
The combo card was $19.50 plus shipping.
I don't have a need for firewire at the moment.
This card for $7 including shipping could keep my aging MOBO up to speed a little while longer.
My onboard 1.1 ports have always been a little hinky if they work at all.

Syba's web site spec sheet on the combo card
http://www.syba.com/us/en/product/43/01/08/1/index.html

mentions a new Part Number
SD-COMBO-02

and an old Part Number
SB-CBALINEC-4E6I

The Chipset for both is listed as
ALi M5271

A pdf Selection Guide on the same page (url) listed above lists the
Main Chipset as
NEC uPD72872, ALi M5271
for THE OLD Part Number with no reference to THE NEW Part Number.

Viewing the card shows only the ALi main chip.
A stand-alone NEC USB2.0 chip would be the same size as the ALi chip.
Perhaps the ALi chip includes the NEC USB2.0 code????
Could one of the smaller chips be doing NEC USB2.0 duty?
Did they scrap NEC to have the ALi chip do both USB2.0 and Firewire in order to market a cheaper card?
I dunno.
They state that the same main ALi chipset used to use NEC USB2.0 on cards in the past.
This is the same Ali main chipset but I don't see anything that says NEC other than their selection guide and their OLD Part Number.

acortech seems to have a better rating than pcimicro.

They both have the USB2.0 only card; the combo card and the IDE controler card I need. Syba/Creative, their both based on the SI chipset and appear to be the same card except for a dollar difference.

Free shipping is rocking my world.

I've used various USB 2.0 chipsets, and have tested them for speed, compatibility, and CPU utilization. For PCI add-on cards, the NEC PD720101 (2nd generation) is the clear winner. Followed closely by the NEC PD720100 (1st generation), with the ALi and ViA (1st gen) far behind. Integrated Intel USB 2.0 blows them all away in speed though. I haven't tried the 2nd generation ViA chipset yet...it was released a while back, so unless you happen upon very old stock, most ViA cards being sold should have the 2nd gen. chipset. My guess is it performs better than the 1st gen. ViA, but still not close to NEC.

Almost all of the dirt-cheap USB 2.0 PCI cards use ALi and ViA chipsets.

What is the chipset on that one from dvcentury? I bought the usb 2.0 card(via chipset) from acortech about 6 months back an it never worked well with my epox 8k7a(via chipset) pc setup. Installed ok but never detected my external harddrive in my computer. Installs it but would not detect it.
