When I plug my USB TV tuner into one of my 6 USB ports on my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, a window pops up and says something like " If you plug into a high speed 2.0 USB port your device will run faster. Click to view available 2.0 USB ports." It show a list of 2.0 ports, I have tried plugging into all 6 ports and all six report the same message. Here is what device manager shows under Univeral Serial Bus Controllers

Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2659
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265A
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265B
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C
USB Composite Device
USB Composite Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

So it does show an Enhanced USB2 controller, but why is it not working with any of the 6 USB ports?

I am getting an error when I try to run my TV tuner, " Cannot render audio" and second error is :Cannot init video" not exact words but close. Thought that the USB problem might be causing the problem with the TV Tuner. Anybody got any idea's? Thanks

Go to Dells website and download the drivers for the laptop. There may be an issues with the main board drivers that has caused the system not to enable USB 2.0.

I tried the drivers from dell. It did the same thing. At some point in trying to get this working I was able to get the USB working and the TV Tuner to work, but when I shut the PC down for the night and booted up the next morning I had the same problem. I have tried everything to get it to work again, but can't get it fixed. Anymore idea's.

Try a powered hub between the laptop and the TV tuner. It could require more power than the laptop's USB port can provide. Laptop USBs are quite limited in that regard.

It has worked in the past with no problems. I'm thinking its about time to reformat. It's been almost 2 years since I've cleaned it out.

Do you have SP applied? I recall usb2 wasnt natively supported until I believe SP1. Otherwise you had to use MB drivers which sometimes were buggy

Yes, I have SP3. My problems started before SP3.

Tried to do a repair install. I'm not sure if it worked or not. It kept asking for the SP2 disk which I do not have, so I had to cancel all the files that it could not find. It did boot back up with SP2 installed though. I don't understand why I only get the popup when I plug in the USB TV Tuner. When I plug anything else into a USB port I dont get that popup. Don't want to do a fresh install but looks like I might have to.

SP2 is what introduced USB2.0 support to XP. You need to install SP2 before SP3. SP3 doesn't come with the updates and patches that SP2 has. So right now your system may be missing the USB2.0 support.

I'm pretty sure SP2 is a prereq for SP3

Doesn't say anything about need SP1 or SP2 before installing SP3
SP3 should have ALL the updates of SP2 with any updates up to the release date of SP3
Just like SP2 was a rollup of all updates of SP1 and any updates up to the release date of SP2
