USB 3.0 drive problems

I have an Asus Z68 mobo and an almost new 16Gb USB 3.0 drive. Everything was working fine, but now I can't copy files from hard drive to USB (progress bar goes almost to the end, but then just stands there and nothing happens).
I haven't unistalled any drivers or install any new software.

the file you are copying is not 4GB or larger? USB drive is not fat 32?

if it is, then it is a known issue. Fat32 can only support files under 4GB in size. You need NTFS on the USB drive for files over 4GB.

Drive is NTFS formatted. I've re-formatted it couple of times, doesn't help. And it takes much longer to format than normally.

Try the drive in another system and if it fails again then its likely FUBAR.

I got it working again, but it takes a while to copy 200mb. The progress bar stops at the end and then after few minutes it finishes. Any idea?
I've checked the drive for errors, none.

Stick the drive in a USB2 port and see if it copies a file in the expected time. A large file will copy at around 30MB/sec.

If that works fine, try it in a USB3 port in another computer.

If that works, then its the USB3 port on the mobo.

If you have the same issues, it's the drive.

NTFS quick vs regular format.

Once a year or two (or when disposing of a disk) either zero the disk, or use ATA Secure Erase, which causes the drive firmware to remove bad sectors from use, rather than depending on NTFS to do it. And then only use NTFS quick format.

If you are trying to copy files larger than 4gb, you need to reformat the usb stick to exFAT.

there is no secure erase for usb flash drives that I know of.

You are probably correctly. The vast majority of USB>SATA bridge chipsets suck donkey balls and don't have ATA pass through. But a few do at least for the ATA SMART commands, so possibly the same chipsets will work for the ATA Secure Erase and Enhanced Secure Erase commands.

OP has a USB flash drive, not a SATA HD connected by USB.

Oops. For flash media, ExFAT is more appropriate than NTFS.

If there's no improvement in behavior, I'd contact the flash drive manufacturer. There are all sorts of incompatibilities, and they're in the best position to know them and swap out the product. Or just return it and get something else.

window's drive caching. can be common to have a fast speed, then have it settle down to a more realistic number (spically when copying over networks). happens to thumb drives and even old floppy drives .
