USB 3 "issues"

Motherboard is in signature. I have downloaded all drivers directly from Gigabyte's website.

My issue is this, when I plug a USB 3 flash drive into any USB port, it takes at least 2 or 3 minutes for my computer to recognize it. To be honest, all my flash drives are protected by bitlocker, but when I plug it into a USB 2 port, it opens immediately.

I am at a loss, following everything I gathered from my friend Google (mostly suggesting to upgrade the drivers....which, as I already said I did)

Suggestions anyone? Other than getting an add-in card such as this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815287019 but why spend extra money when the motherboard should do what I paid for it to do?

Does a non-bitlocker protected drive behave the same way? How about a non-storage device such as keyboard?

Yes to the non bitlocker flash drive...it takes a while (but not as long as the encrypted drives) NO to the mouse and keyboard...they both were immediately recognized and worked as soon as they were plugged into the USB 3 ports. I tried this on both front and rear

Are you talking case port, or mobo port... or both?

Both the front ports on the case plugged into the 19 pin connector on the motherboard, AND he rear USB 3 on the motherboard itself.

BIOS version for those interested is F2.

(On a mildly "interesting" sidenote, if I forget to remove a flash drive from either USB 2 or 3 port before starting the computer in the morning, Windows 7 takes literally 5 minutes to boot. The only boot option in BIOS is the SSD, and if there is no flash drive plugged in, it is like 20 second to Desktop from the time I push the power button.)

Reason I ask is I'm having similar problems... with my Gigabyte Z68/Fractal case. I've traced the case port problems to weak/worn USB ports, but I don't understand the mobo port issue.

I have had driver issues in the past, related to a VIA-chipset USB3 expansion card I installed some time ago... but I have since clean-installed the OS and flashed an updated BIOS... so I think that rules out the driver issue. In my case, I believe it's worn out USB3 ports (they get used more where the USB2 ports don't) but I still think there is a driver issue in there, somewhere.

For some reason you wind up with a USB3 expansion card, get one with a Renesas chipset (I think the Vantec and MediaSonic are, ) not a VIA chipset (HooToo.)

Thank you for the replies...

I have a Fractal case as well, as noted in my sig, but I have been using it less than a month, so worn ports are not an option for me.

I shall take your advise on the Renesas chipset, IF and when it comes down to it, but I would live to get this up and running on it's own.

Edit: The VantecChipset is Renesas uDP720201IS

Does the drive in question use the micro-B USB3 connector by any chance? Because it kind of sounds the last 5 USB3 pins doesn't make proper contact, and that particular connector is a piece of garbage in that regard. This fits with that its immediately recognized if you plug it into a USB2 port.

Have you tried with different USB3 cables?

It is possible that the USB 3 is integrity (parity?) checking flash drives. Does the flash drive's light flicker (implying access) before it finally registers as available?

{Plug in a newly formatted flash drive (ie, no files on it). Is the required registration time noticeably less?}

What happens when you plug in a USB 3 external hard drive (ie, non-flash type drive) and formatted as NTFS? Formatted as FAT32?

Look for possible control options for USB 3 in Device Manager as well as in other areas of "System" related to performance.

With flash drive plugged-in, use "selective boot" option to see what is going on (eg, what is loading) during the USB registration process.

No, I do not use micro-B connectors...all me flash drives are regular size. I have some like this
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-S.../dp/B00HJZJI84 (except mine is blue) to attach an SSD to, and it does work...but (like the flash drives) not immediately.

Yes, the drive's light flickers when I plug it in, but only for a second or two, and then it goes off.

I have used a freshly formatted drive without bitlocker on it, and yes, it takes the same amount of time to register

As mentioned above, I have plugged an SSD into the ports using a cable, and still have a wait time...but only in NTFS, I have not tried FAT32.

As far as the rest of your suggestions, I will try when I get home from work tonight, or tomorrow morning.

Thanks again for all the replies, you are all awesome for your suggestions and help

A longshot, but see:

had same problem as original poster, fix that worked : uninstall Etron usb 3.0 host controller, plug in usb device, re-install Etron usb 3.0 host controller.

PS: There have been a number of times I can recall when trying to install a particular device driver was problematic. Conventional installation simply didnt work (eg, the driver just wouldnt take properly). Eventually, attempting to install the device driver different ways finally resulted in a legitimate working device. Sometimes as many as three or even four ways were attempted before success. Also, what Ive sometimes found (especially with new from scratch installs) is that the order in which things are installed can make a difference.

Good luck.

You might also try newer drivers. Station-drivers have some that seem newer then the ones on Gigabytes support:

Its worth a try at least...

If you front ports are connected to the Etron header, try the AMD header. If not, try the reverse and see what happens.

Okay...at work now, and was just now able to get online.

What I did this morning. Went into DevMgr and uninstalled the USB 3. I then plugged in a flash drive and waited for the computer to tell me "Hey...I detected a new device".

It did not, and I was late and didn't think of going into add new hardware, so I will do so when I get home, so thank you C1 for the link and suggestion...I was "somewhere" in that same mind set

I will also try station-drivers, so thank you Insert Nickname.

ketchup79...I only have one place to plug the front ports into, so I am not understanding what you said. http://www.imagebam.com/image/f9ccf9393319160

Apologies CDC Mail Guy, the Etron controller only has the one port for front panel connections. It may just be a limitation of that chip.

No apologies necessary

Update: Okay...I don't know wtf I did, but I came home from work, plugged in one of the USB 3 flash drives (the bitlocker one) and it opened IMMEDIATELY!!!

There was no pop-up about finding new device...it just WORKED.

I am happy it works now, but a little perplexed as to HOW, but they do work, including the ports on the back of the motherboard.

Issue resolved...thank you all for the help and suggestions.
