USB Cable length

I was looking to buy a Samsung ML-1740 printer. This would require a 12' or so USB cable to reach my computer.

The Samsung factory tech said that ML-1740 printer would not work if USB cable was longer than 6'.

www.usb.org says that you can extend USB cable length and signal transmission by using serially connected USB hubs and cables. The info seemed to be only recent for USB 1. 0 and 1.1.

I also saw an an active USB repeater cable that was supposed to be good for up to 16' using USB 2.0.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for this? It would be much appreciated.

By the way, I have a Samsung ML- 1210 printer. THids works fine on a 12' USB cable.

Common USB cable lengths are 6', 10'-12', and even 16'. If you really feel the need to go longer than 16', you could just get an extension USB cable (or non-powered USB hub) but not quite recommended because the signal may degrade over the length of the connection.

You could use a (powered) USB hub to go longer which will help prevent the signal from degrading, but in general, I would recommend the shortest cable as possible to connect your printer.

The possible signal degradation is what the Samsung tech might have been talking about.. your ML-1740 should work with a 12' cable (IMO)

I wouldn't suggest adding more than one extender cable...I added two to one of mine and the signal is very unreliable. I don't know of any USB signal repeaters, but maybe worht an investment if you really need it
