USb Keyboard and mouse

(Im the locol guy who every one gives me broken computer stuff too)

I was given a system that only has 4 usb ports and the usb drivers was deleted and I cant boot to windows with out getting a new usb device detected. But because I cant use the mouse or keyboard I cant get around this.

I do have mouse and keyboard support in dos and safe mode.



System specs
Intel P3 400
128Mb ram
20Gig Hd
Onboard sound and video

Any ideas with reloading the Os?

So, you want to reload the OS? If so, you can use your usb keyboard no problem, just make sure usb legacy is turned on in the bios. Then boot the cd, reformat, and reload.

I dont want to reload it,
I dont have the discs for it yet and if i get it working ill give it back to the people that gave it to me.

Is there a way to tell windows not to auto load default drivers for the mouse and keyboard?

Or is there a way to tell windows where the drivers are via autoexec.bat or editing the win.ini??

I remember doing this back in the dos days.

Windows XP does not use autoexec or win.ini. The simple solution would be to plug in a PS/2 keyboard. You could try using safe mode with networking support, going onto the internet, and download the correct chipset drivers.

Im sorry I should have said i was using win98. (maybe i though the dos part would help)


EDIT I only have 4 usb ports. and one modem port on the system, nothing elce.

OK in safe mode it uses the bois legacy drivers for the usb.
Is there a way to make normal win98 use the legacy drivers too?


EDIT OK what about a serial to usb converter? I think i have one. Ill plug the usb mouse into the converter and the the converter into the usb port on the system.
