USB keyboard/mouse problem

This could be a motherboard problem but im not sure so I just posted it here. The problem I have concerns my mouse and keyboard. My mouse and keyboard buth randomly stop working. The lights go off on the keyboard and in the optical mouse. Sometimes they will turn back on after a random period of time and sometimes they stay off. I also have USB ports on my breakout box for my sound card and they also stop working. This problem occured out of nowhere. I have had the computer for about 3 monthes and never had this problem. I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Win2k pro and this didnt fix the problem. Any ideas?!

Abit AT7 motherboard
XP 2100+
512 MB RAM
Hercules Game Theater XP
Logitech Internet Navigator Keyboard
Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0

check your bios settings
i had a similar problem until i changed some settings in the bios

I did not change any settings in the BIOS and never had this problem before. I don't think it would not do it at all and then every 5 minutes all of a sudden without something changing in the meantime.

Have you tried connecting the keyboard and mouse via ps2 (I think it is PS2) to see if the problem is due to the USB ports?

If so, can you RMA the motherboard or is it too late after 3 months?

yes i did build the system myself. it has been exactly three months but the place i bought it from has a good return policy. i was hoping it was a problem i could fix tho

now whenever the mouse turns back on after shutting itself off the message about unsigned drivers from microsoft comes up for a HID-Complient Mouse. just some more information..

Are you OC'd at all? I know some mobos had problems with their USB ports when heavily OC'd. Also, as someone mentioned, did you enable USB keyboard/mouse options in the BIOS? I've been wireless for about a year, and never had any issues. Been through numerous DOS-based GUI installs of my HDD's, WinXP, and Win2k. Are you having any IRQ conflicts? Are you daisy-chaining your USB devices? Generally I give my mouse and keyboard their own ports and hook everything else up through my USB Hub (force joystick, digicam, Clie, gamepad, printer, mp3 player) as I seldom use the latter at the same time.

ive got my video, lan, sound, firewire controller, and 2 usb controllers all on IRQ 7. is that too many? also, could chipset or processor overheating be a problem? i am not overclocked at all but my computer has been running at higher temps.

No, IRQ7 is where Win2K and XP put pretty much everything in the world of virtual IRQs, so thats normal. Could be a heat issue, but those usually lead to general OS errors and system crashes rather than peripheral failure. Might be a power issue. Do you have a lot of components on a weak PSU? Again, are you daisy-chaining peripherals on one USB header? USB devices that aren't actively powered all draw from the USB header, so too many components attached to a header could lead to it not working. Double check your BIOS to make sure USB keyboard and mouse are enabled and also make sure whatever USB ports you are using are enabled. Disable unused ports (as well as serial/parallel/midi/game).

I've got a 400 watt PSU so I dont think it is that. What do you mean by daisy chaining? How do i disable all my other USB ports? Also the mouse only turns off when I move it, it does it LOTS more when I play Counter-Strike.

a usb port is capable of supporting (around) 127 usb devices
daisy chaining is actually connecting usb hubs to the port and then connect usb devices(e.g.keyboard,scanner,mouse)and repeating it on and on

this is what i did to solve my problem
went to bios --> integrated periphirals --> checked usb controller as All USB Port
and i also checked the usb legacy support as All Device

check your win2k to see are there any driver conflicts or hardware issues
i think the usb port on the at7 is a usb 2 port
try to get the latest drivers for those at windows update(my win xp had a problem with the usb 2 ports until i installed the usb 2.0 driver from windows update)

There are no device conflicts. It doesn't work when all my usb ports are enabled or when I disable all unused ports. Sometimes the light on the mouse will stay on but no movement will register. Typically when I play Counter-Strike the mouse and keyboard both turn off, but not when I am just in windows it is only the mouse. Also, I can plug the mouse and keyboard into different ports after it turns off and it turns back on. If i put it back in the original usb port it won't work.

I had this same issue with my IT7 Max when I installed XP SP1 & the Abit USB drivers. You can find the fix on Abit's site in the FAQ or do like I did and just format the hdd array and don't install the Abit driver.

A legacy free motherboard wasn't quite a great idea... I had to spend $20 on a new keyboard and format my hdd like 10 times to figure out the problem. I like no serial or parallel ports though.
