USB Problem

I just got some new hardware: new mobo, cpu, soundcard...
I formatted and reinstalled windows(98), I got all of my drivers reinstalled, but my sound doesnt work. I have some Altec Lansing acs495's which are a subwoofer and 2 sattelites that plug into a spot on my sblive and a usb port. When windoews started up for the 1st time after reinstall, it installed some cheap generic driver for a "USB audio device". Windows is now telling me that the driver is old or bad or something. I cant install my speaker software because it can't detect the speakers because of the bad usb driver. I looked all over microsoft's site for a driver but couldn't find anything.
Can anyone help me with this? Having no sound is really annoying!

The USB controllers and drivers are all on the Win98 CD . . . best with SE . . . they are improved.

wait, you have BOTH connected? that is the usb and analog?

use one of them. since the USB is not working, try the analog only. that is the connection to the sound card which i can only assume is working.

why are you looking at MS's site for the drivers? Altec Lansing should provide you with the drivers. But then, is it USB which is not working, or the speakers? (yes, i do understand that usb not working also means the speakers won't, but if usb is fine, and it's only the speakers' drivers, then it's altec lansing's job to fix it). didn't any drivers come with your software package from altec lansing?

and what exactly is the "error" EXACTLY as that window showed?

Ok..
My speakers came with an older Dell system and the software was preinstalled so I didn't get a disk. I have downloaded altec lansing's lastest drivers, but they seem to only be 'speaker control" software because when I try to install them, they refuse to let me because thay can't find my speakers because of the bad USB driver. I think the speakers need to be plugged into a USB port to work.. they may be digital only, im not sure.
The windows error...

I emailed altec lansing but haven't gotten anything back yet...

Ok heres a problem update,
I got some drivers that included a USB controller and installed them. The generic audio device driver changed to an Altec Lansing driver, but I still get the same error message for the new driver that I did for the old one. I also have a speaker control program for the speakers, but it couldn't detect them. I unplugged the USB port and plugged it back in, and the program finally recognized the speakers and the windows error disappeared. Unfortunately, I still am getting no sound although everthing seems to be working fine. I can control the speakers' volume from the program, but I can't from the wheel on the speakers (I should be able to)
I thought I had solver the problem, but I still can't get any sound!
Does anyone know what might be wrong here? (Yes, my sound card is working, there is a little volume meter in my volume control that goes up when I try to play sounds, so I know that signals are coming from the card.)
Someone please help!
