I have a HP PhotoSmart Printer, and its connectiing to my PC via USB port.
I was wondering if something like this would alow me to plug the USB cable from my printer, into it, and then an RJ45 cable into my hub, or router, so everyone on the network will access the printer from there? inside of going through to one of my computers???
basically its turning it into a Network printer... will this work or no?

I would say no, as there is no way to attach a proper IP to the printer, and you'll not be able to see it without proper network settings.

What model is it??? HP might make a jetdirect card for it, depending if it has an MIO or EIO slot...

also, you might want to try the networking area on this one. The only other thing I can think of doing is just making it a network printer off of one of your machines.

Well, there are USB NICs that go betwixt USB and RJ-45, but I don't know if any of them have the built-in functionality of a print server.

Save your money, it can not do it.

All USB stuff that is available now must have computer on one side. You can not connect the current crop of USB (may be the next generation), as independent device.

This device turns the USB port of a computer into Ethernet plug; it can do any thing else.

If want to connect a printer as independent device to network, you either get the HP part that turn it into a Network printer, or if you have the Router with a Printer Server get the parallel port version.

P.S It seems to me that I already answered this quetion a week ago.

You need a USB based printer server. I've not seen one yet. But you can get a simplest parallel to 10B/T printer server for $41 as you can find from price watch. Does your HP PhotoSmart printer have a parallel port also?

That is a USB NIC, it is not a Print Server.
It absolutely will not function the way you are describing.
You need a device called a print server. HP's brand is called JetDirect.

No it isn't. Parallel port is plenty fast enough for printers, and it's not that much slower than USB anyways.

I think Parallel is around 8Mbps compared to USBs 12 which shared to all USB devices.

Parallel is not slow, your HP printer should have EPP/ECP support which offers faster speed than usb.

Here is a chart from HP.

Connection type
Transfer rate (Megabytes/second)

USB 1.0/1.1 Low Speed
0.1875

USB 1.1 Full Speed
1.5

ECP parallel port
3.0

printer on the PP vs USB barely makes any difference.. only on the connectivity side where USB is quick and easy. A 16ft cable is also less bulky than a long PP cable... but those are very minor issues.
