USB SD Card adapter

I have a USB 3.0 microSD card adapter like this:

VID_05E3&PID_0743 is Genesys Logic but should not require specific drivers on Windows 7.

Indeed, it works fine on an Intel chipset USB 3.0 port but on same 2.0 port results in Code 45 not connected after automatically installing the USB Mass Storage Device (Microsoft driver USBSTOR.SYS). Different USB configurations have been tried in UEFI Setup. The same happens on another PC with different controllers: works on NEC 3.0 but not older Intel 2.0.

So what could be going wrong with the 2.0 ports and/or Microsoft drivers?

I don't suppose you want to try and get a linux boot CD/flash drive and try that?
Just trying to see if the USB 2 port is still OK via using linux, and testing it in that environment.

Good idea. So I tried a Memtest86 microSD Card which is Linux and does boot in a USB 2.0 adapter in the USB 2.0 ports, but alas it does not boot nor is it seen by the UEFI in this USB 3.0 adapter. Can a USB 3.0 device somehow not be backwards compatible?

I have that exact same adapter (same VID and PID). It works on both my USB 3.0 ports (ASMedia) and USB 2.0 ports (AMD) under Windows 7. That's probably not much help.

That one must be defective (power issue?). I since got another which appears the same but does work as expected. The PID is different. Mr Evil, what REV is your working PID_0743?

Not that it matters but by NEC I meant Renasas.

I have a really crappy quality extension cable, so I tried plugging it into that, and it didn't work anywhere... Then I took the SD card out, blew on it and put it back in. Now it works again in both USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, with or without extension cable.

Yeah inspect the pins/contacts, take a Q-tip like swab dip the tip into isopropyl alcohol and clean the contacts well.

Nice one. Alas, I tried different cards including new. Blowing through the adapter had no affect.

Try downloading driver from Windows Update, right click on device in Device Manager and select "Update Driver" then allow to go online to search for best driver. Or you can try these are the latest for Windows 10/8/7:

Thanks but I did try Update Driver online and also found the vendor drivers seperately but preferred to avoid installing them. Based upon the experience with the two similar adapters and Mr Evil's experience with the same one, it is most likely a defective.

It going to blow up? You can remove the drivers or roll back to the Windows ones. I've actually found that vendor/hardware-specific drivers has improved some glitchy behaviors and performance over the generic ones on more than one USB card reader device (with Alcor Micro and Realtek chips). But suit yourself.
