I have a Kingston MobileLite G4. I have encountered a problem with the front usb port on my case or motherboard not sure. I have to plug in the mobilelite g4 a couple times to get the computer to recognize it then it gives me a message "This Device can perform faster" USB Mass storage. Which is strange because I am 100% sure I'm plugging into usb 3.0 port and the mobilelite g4 is usb 3.0 device. The problem only happens in front usb ports of the case. When I plug the mobilelite g4 in rear usb 3.0 ports I don't get Device can perform faster message. I never had a problem before with the usb 3.0 port until now recently. I tested speeds benchmark crystal disk the speed results are slower now. I tried using usb 3.0 extension cable and it still would not work. Seems nothing can give the mobileite G4 enough power. I tried updating to latest usb 3.0 drivers still no luck

Q. When I insert the reader into the USB port....in the front of my tower, the unit is either not recognized or I receive an error message.

A. This is due to a power limitation. Though some USB devices may work fine in these USB ports, USB 2.0 High Speed devices usually require more power. In order to resolve this issue, you will need to insert the reader directly into one of the main USB ports. These USB ports are usually located in the back of the tower.

I think that port is dying. If it's your home built PC, try to get another USB front panel. I've encountered the same problem with 3 or 4 Dell PCs at work; they showed that message before they stopped recognizing any USB device. One Dell PC had both front USB ports death.

A reason for this behaviour can be that the 5 additional USB3 pins are not making proper contact with the socket. There isn't much you can do about it unfortunately, other then wriggling the plug a bit and see if it helps.

How old is the Windows installation? Each time you plug something into a USB port, a remnant is left behind and accumulate clutter after some time and you are more likely to see hiccups like this.

Buying a new hard drive and reinstalling from scratch solves a lot of problems. Copy old personal files over to new drive once you get it running again. You can plug the old drive back in and be able to boot into the old drive if you need to. You can format and reinstall too, but hard drives are pretty cheap so I prefer this method.

Public computers see all kinds of USB drives but they don't accumulate clutter endlessly, because they're routinely reimaged.

By "clutter" you mean install records? You can remove those with USBdview.

The first time you connect a wireless mouse to a USB, you'll see Windows install driver and get it ready. It goes through the same process all over when you connect it to a different USB port. A profile gets created for each device on individual port basis. Over time, it takes longer for newly connected device to become ready. I've personally gotten "this device could perform faster" error with USB 2.0 device connected to USB 2.0 port a few times. Connect to an access point once and the association between the AP MAC and SSID are connected and stored. When you encounter a different AP with a different MAC address but the same SSID, it will register in the system as "actiontec 2", "actiontec 3" and so on even after you do "forget this network".

Those are not the only garbage that tend to collect in your system drive over time. You can go through and hand pick trash as you mentioned but getting every bit of it is time consuming and a fresh install is generally faster on the same install that's been on the system since the day it was put into use. It often makes enough difference that you essentially get a "new" computer. This is also the best time to upgrade to a larger HDD or an SSD. You could go buy a brand new computer but you'll often get a less fresher experience since computers sold in retail stores are pre-loaded with bloatware.

That's completely normal Windows behaviour. Unless you're running a 486 or similar, I doubt you notice any performance difference before and after you clean up. There are far more serious things that can affect performance, and Windows has gotten quite good at internal "house keeping".

Occasionally a reinstall/re-image just isn't an option.

The real problem with cheap PC isn't just bloatware. Its those slow-as-molasses 5400RPM HDDs manufactures insist on using, because more GB's are better right...?
