Something that previously cost hundreds of thousands of bucks now under $2k.

Amazingly accurate and fast.

details

I guess this makes me an uber geek measuring the spectra of things that light up first thing on a Sunday morning while the others sleep off their hangovers.

as an owner of many optical devices its pretty cool. we bought some from another company spectronics if i remember right. But in reality nothing beats our OSAs those are the best of the best in my book.

It tells you what components make up the light that enters the sensor.

It's proof that the eye is EASILY fooled. For example you can adust the light from your flat panel display so it looks just like the daylight coming through the blinds yet if you plot it you will see all kinds of spikes. The daylight plot is very smooth. This is a good thing actually but one can do some interesting detective work with one of these.

Most schools do have them. There are little non-electronic ones which use a prism.

Kind of hard to visualize detecting monochromacity of a dpss laser and its possible lack of an infrared filter to eliminate the possible overclass leakage of longer pump wavelengths from the output aperture with a defraction grating though.

Hey, they're only $20, what did you expect?

If you point it at an object illuminated by sunlight can you get a spectral signature or does it need more light?

Some type of ancillary device would be required whether a simple magnifier (collimation) or input integrating sphere which would be expensive.

I'm a gadget guy; this would qualify as an Uber Gadget.

But what the hell do you DO with it?

Minerva: Bill, according to my portable USB Mass Spectrometer, your flourescent lighting in the kitchen is only in the 6200K color range. Yet you paid for 6500K bulbs. Doesn't that bother you?

Bill: Take your light-o-classifitometer thingee and get the hell out of my house.

See what I mean?

A little tip: You are trying way too hard to sound smart on this board.

A true genius would make sure that their words are well taken by the listeners. Einstein was able to explain the theory of relativity to schoolchildren. I have a feeling that you'd have difficulty explaining what ice is to Eskimos.

You should strive for simplicity and clarity, not for complexity and extravagance.

I'm convinced that you, like EyeMWing, are not real. You're clearly a group of people conducting some sort of psychological nerd experiment on us to see our reactions to what you post.

Either that or I agree with 91TTZ - you try way too hard to sound SMRT.

See what I mean?

Actually the real reason why his CT is too low is because the drift from the deep fryer has embedded grease on his prismatic covers. This filters the blue light first giving the apparent lighting a yellowish tinge and lowering the color temp. HOWEVER the SA does not lie and will show the same lines albeit at lower magnitude. The delta from before and after plots reveals just how much grease is FODing up the difusor which is quite disgusting. It's also a trap for insects that are attracted to the mercury's strong blue and green lines.

So, what you're saying is that the lighting in his kithen is AFU'd b/c his kitchen is filthy, right? See? Even laymen can grasp the finer points of high falutin' stuff like this!

Please stop. Seriously.

Nevermind.

I will not post here any more since you guys are clearly offended by a girl that is reasonably smart and has similar interests. Good job. Have fun.

Awww, you're taking your USB Mass Spectrometer and going home? And I was just getting ready to press some more buttons and stuff!

It has nothing to do with you being a girl. Look at JGatsby.

In fact, I bet you are JGatsby, since he left around the time you popped up.

Well honestly, your threads aren't terribly interesting and they're all posted in the wrong forum.
