Wife has a Dell 600m and its on a port replicator for most of her at home use, the port thing is nice and all but after a while of use you can FEEL that bottom of the lappy getting HOT...

I have plenty of open usb ports, was thinking is there a small thin profile hard drive cooler type fan that has a USB end connector (I am not handy with wiring) that I could position in there between the laptop and port or possibly aim sideways into the gap to help move cool air through.

Any good gadget sites that have usb fan options like this, I am even willing to dremel out the port stand a bit to make a small fan or two fit, its the wiring I don't wanna do but I do have usb ports all available on back of port unit.

Dell 600m is the lappy,
This is the stand that the 600m sits on to mate with the port

The gap between laptop and stand isn't SUPER big but possibly somehow from the side if I could get an idea or two of something that runs off usb power that would be great....

Any suggestions appreciated,
Bill

I'm not sure that fan would work so well. With the blades being that large I think that most of it might just get directed around the laptop.

I'm not certain how the port replicator and stand fit together, but I think the vantec might be a better choice. So, put the vantec under the laptop with the port replicator attached and put the whole work on the stand. It may or may not be secure enough, but it could work.(hard to tell without having one in from of me)

Running a USB fan will add to the internal load and make more heat. Use a regular little A/C fan if you must. All laptops get hot underneath - you can also elevate it it with stick on rubber feet that will help create more airspace.

Laptops are designed to provide the cooling needed for the system. The cooling fans turns on and off as needed. There are utilities that can make the fan run all the time, if that is desired. Some users object to fan noise more than heat.

A fan like this on the desk aimed at the laptop would be much better.
