If you want the Worst conversion EVER.. which might actually make the sound more authentic because when vinyl was at it's peak, speakers still sucked.

Please do not thread crap.

I'm not sure if a worse sounding record player has been sold after the middle 50's. Shortly after 1960 I think the era of magnetic cartridges started, with the peak of cartridge technology by the early 80's. Except in children's toys ceramic hasn't been used in decades.

Playing records is a delicate mechanical to electrical process with good quality starting around $1k. Save your $20 and find a friend with a decent record player with a real cartridge.

Save your $20 and find a friend with a decent record player with a real cartridge.

I don't quibble with the advice to pass on the unit - but most folks will need a time machine to find such a friend Not to mention that a vinyl fan's idea of "decent" was on the order of $2K 20-25 yrs ago, and I'd bet that number is even higher today.

Perhaps a better suggestion would be to point towards a similar product with a better cartridge? Again though, I suspect the price of a "decent" cartridge will be 4-5X the price most AT readers want to pay for the whole unit....

Not to get too crazy off topic, but only a few things can't be found in digital form on the internet. To do a proper, as in decent worth wasting your time, transfer you need;

Clean the record with a good wet cleaner, maybe more than once.
Use a good quality turntable with a matched arm and cartridge, these start around $300 used and go up a LOT.
Good quality phono preamp and RIAA equalization stage and ADC.
Software to clean up the pops and ticks and make the desired file types.

Put an ad on craigslist or do some searches.

Don't bother for anything you can find already in digital format.

Just slightly off-topic so please excuse (Mods - I am being courteous!).

I have been wanting to do this for sometime. I have shelves of vinyl that I would like to convert to MP3. I have seen various USB turntables over the years but was always skeptical of the quality. OTOH, I suppose anything is better than nothing. Still, if you are willing to go through the time consuming process of copying an LP album, you want to do it right. Remember, it is all "1X" capture!

As you can guess, I go back aways (nearing retirement so have the time now) so I have a decent turntable and cartridge (Technics SL-1300 Direct Drive and Shure V-15 Type III for any audiophiles out there), as well as, receivers that still have a phono input. I even have an old SoundBlaster Audigy card but it is not installed on my old desktop machine.

Can someone provide some guidance or point me to a website that provides information on how to best to do this? In particular, curious about the hookup and SW. My understanding is there are utilities that can do a lot to clean up clicks, pops and general background noise on vinyl. I was always fastidious about cleaning records before playing (what a ritual...I even still have my old Discwasher brush. You know, the one with a hollow wooden handle to store the cleaning fluid (which the knowledgeable never used).

Thanks!

Here are some places to poke around and get some opinions, but the gist I would suggest is find a playback rig you "like" the sound of and use a decent ADC and make a raw capture of the sound to twiddle later on at your leisure. Personally I liked the sound of my SL1200 with a nice gel mat replacing the factory one, but it wasn't in the same league as my Pink Triangle with a SME IIIb and Shure V15 VMR. You need a VERY quiet table to get real bass out of a LP, and that generally means belt drive.
