Hello.
I wanted to know if someone has tried to somehow connecting those usb3 and 4 ports available on some motherboards. I know that special port should be purchased from the same company as is motherboard to acces these two usb ports. But I was thinking, what if I'll just try to hook up some USB device to it using couple of wires and some soldering?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

using couple of wires and some soldering

That's a BAD idea, I would be extremely impressed if it actually worked.

It is considered good practice to avoid soldering of any kind to your motherboard, cpu, video card, sound card, scsi card, etc unless you really have to. If it a'int broke, don't fix it.

I have seen standard USB connectors available at CompUSA. You don't have to solder anything either, just connect the pins.

uhhh ouch no no no.... *falls on floor and begins twitching*

anyway NO!, assuming you have a USB header(similar to the A7v's) you simply put it into an open slot in the case(my enlight has one just above my AGP card so it works perfictly) and then connect the pins(cable should have come with motherboard, look for something unused 4 pins with one blocked) for gods sakes man do not soder ANYTHING.

well, only Asus motherboards come with the extra connector. But you can buy one for like 5 bucks here on the forum, maybe even less. Why would you spend all that time when you could just buy it for a few bucks??

this is semi-related and i never got an answer when i wrote this question before. but i have an asus board with an extra usb cable and header. are the extra usb parts that asus provides with their boards universal? i planned on using them on my msi board, but wasn't sure if they only worked on asus or all mobos.

Good question, scheck. The stuff Asus provides sometimes works on other mobos, it all depends. Some use the same 2 x 5 pin connector, others use a 10-pin connection (i heard this, I haven't actually seen one) I would check the MSI manual or ask someone using an MSI board to see how they do it.

You don't necessarily need to purchase a usb port connector from the motherboard manufacturer. But you do need to be sure that the pin wiring is compatible.

Here is a web page on how to check pin settings.

Here is an example of an OEM part that can be purchased. Note the pin specifications

For MSI K7T Pro2A Front USB Connector Pin Specifications see page 2-22 (if using US Manual Rev 1.0E)

Note: When comparing 2x4 or 2x5 pin specs, be sure you understand how the vendor is counting pins. For example, Here is how MSI labels their 2x5 pin header vs. how one OEM vendor labeled their 2x5 connector socket.

MSI vs. OEM (Hope you can understand my crude graphic, he )

Scheck, I don't think your Asus connector will work on the MSI board. You don't indicate which ASUS board you have so I randomly picked one manual from the ASUS web site. At least for the manual I looked at, the ASUS pin layouts don't match MSI's.

that prob. falls under the "give it a try" catagory. "if pin fits, use it"

Scheck, no the asus connector will not work on your MSI. I have both boards and tried it, the asus connector has one pin blocked off, it may possibly work if you were to break that pin off the header on the MSI board but it's not really worth it for me to try.
