You could say that. Its definitely a serious kit though. Its not uber flashy and unnecessary. I think it adds a professional and enthusiast look to it.

Looking in your NY area Craigslist, found these :

'94 Z28, 106k miles, $3,500 http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/cto/1152168933.html

'87 Trans Am, 58k miles, $4,200 http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/cto/1145987197.html (somewhat of a collector's item, particularly now that Pontiac is toast, but this car is still '80's GM product, not the best interior)

'00 Prelude, 134k miles, $4,000 http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/cto/1145047674.html

'92 300ZX, 97k miles, $4300 http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/cto/1153583301.html

Those cars listed above with the 3800 are not a bad deal at all either, very reliable drivetrain. I'd go with the Buick over the Pontiac though, not as cheesy looking, and probably better interior.

How is the honda prelude compared to regal gs or the pontiac? I like the look of Pontiac better.

Prelude is a different class of car. The Regal and Pontiac are larger, and have significantly more torque, as well as being notably heavier. The H22 motors in the Prelude are very reliable, parts are plentiful and cheap, and you can say the same for the 3800 in the Buick and Pontiac. Handling will be a lot better in the Prelude, and fuel economy a bit better as well. As long as you find a reasonably good example of any of these, the right car for you is something only you can determine.

FYI: I have a 97' Pontiac Trans Am I'm looking to sell for right around that price point. Slightly higher miles (130k), but virtually all highway miles, upgraded exhaust, speakers, amps, etc. 6sp manual, black on black leather, t tops.

PM me if ya want

Yep, but since it's faster than the vast majority of cars on the road, I'll let it slide.

I am back. Did not buy a car yet. How reliable are the other pontiac's like grand am/gt or a regular grand prix gt? GTP will eat up the gas. I also looked at mitsubishi galant V6, but they seem to be more expensive to insure.

Hey, I'm looking to sell my 97 Infiniti I30 (mechanically the same as the super reliable Maxima's of the late 90s).
I'm in MD - my aunt originally bought the car in NJ. Just in case you're interested. It's relatively fast, reliable and safe.

This would be a needle in a haystack, but possibly a 91 Honda CRX. Assuming it doesn't have 300,000+ miles and hasn't been molested (very big IFs), should be reliable, and will get around 45mpg highway.

It's lightweight, so it should be reasonably quick, and the handling is very good from what I've read.

This.

The CRX is my favorite car. You can generally find them with DOHC and even Type R engines for under 4K. Not to mention they are quick and handle like a dream.

EDIT: This CL posting has a completely bad ass CRX for just under 5K.

Fast and economical. Looks great.

I disagree. Any car that old is bound to have issues regardless if its a Honda.

Yeah, and they can be modded to legitimately fast cars. There's an all-motor 171hp one out there doing 0-60 in the low 4s! Crazy.

I am looking at getting a 3rd gen trans am or camaro. they are really cheap, and are well built cars with nearly unlimited aftermarket potental and engines that are very easy to re-build/modify.

fast in what way? around town, at the track ( drag strip or road racing )

I bought my 240SX for 5k ( 1995 ), I wouldn't describe it as fast in stock form. It's been reliable and handles well.

in your range: ( no real order just as they come )
rx7 ( fc )
miata
240sx ( s13 or s14 )
cough motorcycle cough
civic ( fwd fail )
old school supra?
z32 300zx
m3 ( e36 possibly but most likely older )
