Used Car Recommendations Around $10K

I'll be graduating next month and moving out to Colorado Springs near the end of May/beginning of June to start a new job, and I've decided to sell my '95 Civic and purchase a used car before heading out that way. And, yes, I will be driving whatever car I get all the way out there.

I will likely be purchasing the vehicle in the Indianapolis, IN area, if that helps narrow down my choices. I have no idea if used car pricing varies much in different areas across the nation. I'm looking to spend around or under $10K. However, I have the possibility to bump that closer to around $12K if it would be a much wiser investment.

Here are some things I'm looking for:

1. Must get decent gas mileage. If it will pull ~30mpg or more on the highway and average at least in the high 20s or low 30s, that would be great.

2. Preferably a car...not an SUV (even if small...though something like a Kia Soul is fine), van, truck, etc. I would prefer a 4-door car over a coupe, but coupes are fine. Hatchbacks are OK too.

3. Must have a smooth and quiet ride.

4. Must be comfortable, especially when it comes to lumbar support. As I mentioned, this will be driven for many hours at a time when I move! My back is fairly prone to hurting quickly while driving unless the seats are comfortable and offer proper support.

5. Must accommodate tall people. I'm nearly 6' 4", though I am very slender.

6. Must be reliable and not be too expensive with repairs and such.

To give you a bit of perspective on what I've driven before, my GF has a 2008 Kia Rio. I find the seats to be too firm and uncomfortable, though they offer decent lumbar support. The Soul also had hard seats, as did a newer Forte I looked at.

I recently test drove a 2012 Camry. I thought it was a nice car, but somewhat boring. It was quiet and very comfortable, but almost felt a bit floaty for my tastes. That might actually be a good thing for me in the end, though, if I got used to it. It's certainly better than being too stiff of a ride.

My parents have a 2010 Sentra. I'm not a fan of the looks, but it is very comfortable, quiet, and has a smooth ride. Nissan seems more comparable to Toyota in this regard compared to, say, Honda. I liked that it felt a bit more connected to the road than the Camry I drove, but I also though some of the windows were kind of small. Overall, it's a surprisingly nice car.

I just test drove a 2011 Ford Fusion today. I've been eyeing these, as they look like a potential candidate. I did not find the seats quite as comfortable as the Camry or Sentra, but they weren't bad at all (certainly a step up from my Civic or my GF's Rio). Plenty of head and leg room. Comfortable. Fairly quiet, though the engine could be a bit loud and was slightly jerky when shifting. I thought it drove pretty well, though. My main complaint was the speedometer, since it only has increments of 20mph posted with no intermediate dashes from what I could tell. That made it difficult to gauge how fast I was actually driving. But when I looked at photos online, there appear to be dashes that I did not see while test driving...?

I've been eyeing the Fusions because I can get a newer model with lower mileage than I could from Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. I could get a 2010 or 2011 for $12-13k, and that's the type of situation when I think stretching my budget would be appropriate. And while they're somewhat plain, I find them stylish enough.

Based on all of this, I'd be very grateful for any suggestions! And don't be afraid to mention something even if it doesn't fit all of the criteria.

Why not get a newer Civic?

I'm curious where you're finding 1 or 2 year old mid sized sedans for 60% of blue book, unless you're looking at really high mileage cars.

It's pretty common around here to see 2010 or 2011 Fusions (SE) going for less than $13k, generally with 60-70k miles or so on them. I would call that acceptable mileage for my situation.

A newer Civic is definitely an option that I have considered. I'd probably have to get a 2006 model. However, I feel like I could do better for the price when it comes to comfort, ride, noise, etc. I've never actually driven or ridden in that generation of Civics, though, so I could be very wrong. The 2013 Civics are definitely very nice. I quite enjoyed riding in my friend's new Civic.

Just throwing it out there: Depending on your financial situation, and if your credit is good, for about $1500 out of pocket to cover taxes and what not you could then lease a significant number of new cars at $199/month. Might not make sense for you now, though.

Consider a diesel or a well powered gasoline engine. Gasoline engines lose quite a bit of power up at this altitude.

Any particular cars you would recommend, then?

Unfortunately, diesel sedans are only now making headway in the states. Used, you're pretty much limited to a Jetta or Passat (you can look at Mercedes, but I would fear any repair/maintenance costs). The VW's are pretty damn nice but you'll probably have to increase your budget.

Personally, I went for a truck when moving out here from California. A 4WD pickup has been invaluable. Get's through all the high snow that leaves 2WD vehicles stranded on the side of the road. The Springs gets its fair share of the white stuff.
The only downside is being designated tailgating and moving-big-stuff transport for my friends (not location dependent of course).

A peppy Subaru is another option; but again may be out of budget.

Good luck on your decision and future in colorful Colorado!

One consideration...

....some brands/models are more easily found and at lower prices in different parts of the country...Camry in Florida, Subaru in Colorado...you might wait to look for your new set of wheels until after you move...

This. I value reliability and modern safety features. I would never buy used with all of the $150-$200 leases available.

I have a Toyota Corolla. It drives nicely and is pretty great on gas. I'm not sure how it holds up against other cars, but you can definitely find a newer one for under $10,000 and from the look of it it'd suit your needs nicely.

I own a 2006 Civic 4-door that I bought at about three years old, and am extremely happy with it. Mixed city/highway averages about 30mpg, and I find the seat has great support on long drives. It's fairly quiet (though still definitely hear the road noise), and its 5-speed automatic is very smooth.

The only servicing that's been required is oil changes, a preventative transmission fluid change, and a front brake job.

I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. It's been a great car so far. I do wish the seat would go back farther -- I'm 6'1", and it's right at about my comfort limit. Depending how you're built, it could be an issue for you, but you won't know until you sit in one.

I have zero interest in buying a truck, mostly because of gas mileage reasons and other personal preferences. The nice thing is that I'm looking at apartments that are literally across the street from where I'll be working. If I can get one of those, snow won't be much of an issue. Thanks for the good luck wishes!

This is true. The reason I'm buying before leaving is that my Civic is under my father's name, and my parents wanted to help me sell it and get something newer while I'm still in the same state as they are. There's still the possibility that I'll just take the Civic with me and get something else out there.

I have no interest in leasing. My parents like to invest in a vehicle that they can own for years on end, and I've more or less adopted that mindset. They never buy new cars either...always at least a year or two used, if not more. Reliability and safety isn't an issue if you pick a good used car...

I liked the Corolla that I test drove...it was just a bit boring for my tastes. But you can't always get every single thing you want! I would probably step up to a Camry if I could find one in my budget, but that really depends on the year and mileage.

Consider a Subaru or newer Honda?

Honestly, I didn't see many Subarus that I was interested in around here. And I love Honda, so of course I've looked into it! I'd probably end up with a ~2006 Civic or Accord if I went that route, likely the Accord since they're larger, smoother, and quieter while still getting decent gas mileage.

Thanks for the input! I should make an effort to test drive one around that year if I can. I do love my '95 Civic and my friend's 2013 Civic!

Accord/Camry would be good choices...
In your area, a basic Accord, Camry, (or Subaru Legacy if you can find one) with a stick might be available...a 2005ish model year with 80-100k miles would be a good find for $7-9,000....I got my 2005 Camry LE stick with a new dealer installed clutch @ 97k miles from a Toyo dealer for $6500 (trade-in value) because here the typical (elderly) Florida Camry driver is not into manual trannies.
