Any web host or news provider that's ever tried unlimited bandwidth had gone running with their tail between their legs in a very short period of time. It just doesn't work, period and only the completely ignorant or dishonest even try any more. There are too many people with fast connections, unlimited computer download time and an unquenchable thirst for free movies, software or music for a news server to offer unlimited downloads. Usenetserver.com will either:
1) Raise prices greatly inside 2 months
2) Limit downloads within 2 months
3) Be running slower than AOL on a 14.4 modem within 2 months.
4) All of the above.

Don't get suckered in by undeliverable deals. Until there are servers with unlimited clock cycles, pipes with unlimited bandwidth and hard drives with unlimited space, there will never be legitimate "unlimited" deals.

Good point. I would dl 1 gig an hour easily back with verizon. But cablemodem costs $50/month with unlimited ng download. Maybe if these companies charged more, it would be possible to offer unlimited access?

Newsfeeds has had unlimited bandwidth for months and they seem to be doing all right. And I would say most ISPs offer you unlimited downloads on newsgroups, although their retention and completeness varies.

I decided to sign up but it won't work. Did not get a confirmation email so I sent them an email and support told me to sign up again. Signed up again and now it won't take my CC.

signed up...

comparison:

usenetserver - 6 connections allowed, about 500 megs an hour

verizon (isp accout from a friend ) - 4 connections allowed, about 1 gig an hour

both on an ethernet connection.

i'm dling from a vcd group...retention is good. fills probably won't be a problem with pars.

not bad for $14 and change.

I signed up for this the other night as comcast only gives us a gig a month with giganews and it just wasn't cutting it. I had gotten the link to the place by checking out the bellsouth site since I cam from DSL and this place was either what they offered or just there. The pause thing is a little annoying, but if you check the system status they do mention the problem and I emailed tech support and they said it will get better. Still, this is the best deal I've found so far for those of us that just can't cut it with 6 gigs a month (let alone a day) and such. Still unfortunate to have to pay this much extra for comcast's "cheap" service.

This isn't a pissing match

I use and prefer UNS to easynews so be it, doesn't make me right or wrong.

Though having dificulty give it a couple a days for retenetion to go up and traffic to settle down

Mole

as for 10 sec pauses, my guess it's a switch in Xnews

Works fine for me now. Speed is very nice ~1.97mbps. Now I can finally use all my free CD-Rs.

Thanks for the find. I haven't used Usenet since I switched to DSL from cable (still miss the @home server speeds) but I figured I'd try this for a few months. I've gotten 2.5 GB since last night. (damn this 640k download speed.) I'll try from a better connection Monday and try to post my results.

Also, if your a newsbin user you can get another 3% off (goes from 14.95 to 14.45). Not alot, but when your spending less is better right? See the info on the Newsbin message of the day.

I recently switched to usenetserver.com and so far have been surprised at how well it works. I was using easynews before while on cable. Easynews allowed me to get all the fills I needed and I could reasonably stay within the 6GB mark. When I had to switch to DSL though, it got pricey real quick (Downloaded 6GByte off usenetserver in the past couple days.). Their plan isn't for unlimited access. They say you're limited to 2megabit downstream at a time, which gets calculated out to 20GByte/day. That's enough to max out a low end DSL line or capped cable modem, so it works great for most people. I imagine when they decided to offer this, they probably sat down in advance and figured out how much bandwidth would cost them, and how much they needed to charge for 2 megabit down. There was a time in the past couple days when I couldn't download a list of newsgroups from there servers, and it's been down for a few minutes in the past couple days, but for me it's not an issue since my newsreader is persistent enough to get the files when the servers available again. I would heartily recommend it to anyone with a broadband connection who has been downloading binaries from anywhere on the net.

for the high speed, it's 6connections at 2mb/sec - so does that mean i can do 6connections x 2mb = 12mb total (i'm on a 10mbit connection)? or is that 2mb total... anybody know?

I think your math is right, but fire them an email, their support is among the best around.

completion problems exist.

Usenetserver's completion and retention is terrible. What good is a high limit if there isn't anything good to download?

I'm almost positive it's 2Mbit per connection.

I'm downloading at a steady 5Mbit (~640KBps) right now with 6 connections open.
