first. thier news.usenetserver.com is crappy like crazy, since i sign up, i can hardly log in or after a while i will have no connectoin to the place.
second, i found out the west server, and i log in, have okay speed, untill this afternoon, i can't log in again .
third. thier east server, wtf, can't even log in, like my account does not exist here..

am i missing something here ? cuz the service ain't that great and speed is not constant at all
maybe too many user? a lot lag spike too ...

btw my connection is excellent with easynews, so there is nothing wrong with my connection at all.
It could be something in between your server and usenetserver. My connection was using up 24% of a 100MB/s connection -> oc3, so I can tell you that their connections do provide what the claim. I downloaded 7gb so far since my first post.

Ummm tha is wat i was thinking before, but not anymore, because
when i m downloading, the speed is decent. but after a while
i will be not able to communicate with the server. and then it is dead for like couple mins or so ..
so it is really weird for me, im using earthlink dsl, and live in s. cali. Anyone else have the same problem >?

What are you using to download from newsgroups? I'm currently using ForteAgent.

Also what utility program are you using to monitor your download speed connection?

thanks

It depends on your ISP. Right now, I have cable access through Roadrunner. I get around 2000 mbps on their newserver which I could pretty good. The only problem I have with Roadrunner is that binaries only have a 3 day retention rate and with occasional incomplete posts. Even that is manageable, but 2 months ago, I went on vacation for 10 days and missed a lot of stuff. I decided to supplement Roadrunner with Easynews for $10/6GB/30days.

I use Newsbin Pro as my primary newsreader. It allows me prioritize my newservers so that I download all of my files first from my ISP and only have to pick up missing segments from Easynews. 6 gigs a month is perfect for this situation.

Now on the other hand, if I had ISP a crappy newserver, I would jump on this deal. 20 gb/day for $15 with ~10 day retention is a great deal for broadband user.

BTW, what program do you guys as your newsreader. I use Agent to get posts off Roadrunner (3-day retention) and see what's available. I then switch to Newsbin Pro to actually download the files so that I always get complete posts since it can handle multiple newservers.

I've noticed completion and speed at Usenetserver have both gotten much better this week. Newsbin says they have three servers online and a fourth is coming next week.

For those of you using Easynews, don't forget their "free gigs" feature. If you become part of their "team" for the United Devices cancer project, you get a free gig for every fifteen days of computer time. I have my computers set to work on the project at night. It's a good cause and you can get a little something extra for it as well.

I signed up to these guys about 5 days ago because my road runner server which has served me so well has gone to utter crap in the past 2 weeks, and eventually reached the point were nothing was complete. the first night speed was ok but requesting post took forever, it turned out to be a one night thing. Since then I've been able to obtain 230Kbytes on one connection (kinda annoying, my cap is 250kbytes, but oh well) and post request are very fast. I am also impressed with the header retrival speed, and the retention is double that of what road runner was. The only dumb thing is headers seem to be kept for 10 days, so I found nearly half the post to be expired, so I can't rely on post's expireing through header retrival alone.

I have easynews but I use it for fills and missed posts (I download lots of anime, and the 40 day retentions of easy news has been an utter life saver at times where I some how missed a complete posting, or parts. esp at times when road runner servers dies for a weekend).

So far, I like it lots. Im kinda surprised that the speed limit is 2mbit per connections out of six connections, I figured it would have been 2mbit total which would be fine for most cable and dsl users, allowing for 12mbit of data flow per person can allow T3+ users to cause some havoc.

Bump and a commentary, I just joined. I've been with giganews the past year on their $30/16gb mo plan. Giganews has been fantastic to me in terms of performance, so it will be interesting to see how usenetsever holds up.

Right now header download is noticably slower than giganews, on an order of 2-3x.

I'll post a broader comparison once I see retention and actually download articles.

A note to potential subscribers- you have 3 days to cancel and get your money back per:
http://www.usenetserver.com/unlimiteddownloadletter.html

So there's little to lose except some time.

Here's hoping it works out!

Yes I must agree 1 GB a month is not enough, I am on Comcast as you are, where are you located? I've been hearding mix review about Usenetserver. Has anyone who on Comcast in New Jersey having any connection problems with Usenetserver???????

i'm in ca using usenetserver.com and retention for binaries is still at 5 days.. hope they bump it up to 14 days like they said. with easynews i got 4mbit download at least with usenetserver only getting 1.1mbit that's it.

let me know if this changes soon.

The binaries retention rate right now is 3 days mostly. Not so good when you're on dialup like me.

takeru:

I'm from NY and its spotty, good and bad. During peak times, 8-11pm the past week its been really slow, less than the advertised speed. However in the early morning (before7am) with 4-5 ports open I get 8mbps.

After using Usenet for many years, what I now prefer is to use the free text newsgroup service for discussion groups (see link on page one of this thread), and P2P for binaries.

Binary newsgroups were helpful before P2P, but their main problem is you can only download what someone else has decided to upload in the past 10 days. With P2P, usually everything is available all the time (of course, there are some specific exceptions to that, but there always exceptions and problems with any system).

HepDude: what P2P program are you using to download binaries? Don't you find it a problem with connection speed? With the newsgroups I seem to get at least 1mbit or better download but P2P I seem to only get 30Kb/sec or so with Kazaa etc...
