wel it seems usenet has been taking a nose dive. servers are constently getting farked, you cant go 2 days without one of the back servers (which you are allways bound to get directed too) going down, loseing data (many times groups either come up missing, or all post whiped and you start from scratch).

this has been going on nearly since I signed up.. im afraid these guys will not be seeing another $15 from me next month. :/

as long as i contine to gte 1Mbit/sec (my dsl is capped at 1.5 anyway) and they continue to have available servers ( i don't mind chaning servers every once in a while) then im not complaining...$15/month for unlimited downloads and decent connection can't be beat!

I'm not sure how it was before, but it's been good for me. I do a lot of downloading off peak times, and I've been maxing out my 1.5 Mbit connection. I've pulled about 40 gigs in my first week, tons of movies and games, but I do wish their retention was a little longer. I also heard they were added 2 more servers to help with the load (within a week or two) so it should get better.

Since this was the first time I've used usenet, I checked out some of the other places that offer usenet, and their prices were way above the $15 for unlimited. For the price and the amount I download, it's a steal. But I guess if you're not into binaries easynews might be more up your alley.

Usenetserver was very reliable and speeds were fast enough to keep up with my 1500kbs cap (1 stream would almost reach the cap, 2 concurrent streams kept the meter pegged (I use dumeter). They had all the main groups and retention was good.

At the end of the 1st year, I renewed for the next and the unused gigabytes were carried over (I think the plan was 1GB/month).

However, with the change in plans, the cheapest is now 13.95/mo ($168 per year) which is NOT HOT! At least not compared to my previous $50, even though the GB's are higher.

I am looking for other alternatives that would cost $100/year or less.

Check this free one (no binaries): http://news.cis.dfn.de/

This is free with a $4 signup (yes binaries - low limit though):
http://www.teranews.com/

I tried and canceled this (good price but didn't work):
http://www.100proofnews.com

I am very interested in recommendations. It does seem that prices have gone up around the board over the last few years.

Thanks,
Gary

Well I must say that I am one happy customer I am in Jersey using Comcast and currently I'm getting around 1.35 mbps, now that's not bad in my book. No need to worry about download limitation, I'm on board for life. Try it out if you don't like it cancel it with 3 days and get a full refund.

I am going to have to look into this. I would require a unlimited download news though, as at this very moment I have 8.2 gigs in queue with GrabIt.

scottdog81: which news server do you use?

Looks like their binary article completion is in the toilet, across the alt* board. Somewhat predictable.

Blech.

as far as i know they are all the same now.... news.usenetserver.com will direct you to one of several servers to download from

edit: there have been a couple times where i couldn't download from the server and by changing the server from news.usenetserver.com to xxx.xxx.xxx.179 or 182 or somethign it has fixed it...this however only happened twice

I have been with them since 9/27 and have always used news.usenetserver.com and never had a problem. Knock on wood though

At the time I tried, they were having sever problems (and mentioned it on their home page)

I have not yet signed up for any other servers and am watching this thread to get some ideas. I will try out Easynews soon.

I use teranews's paid service.... my limit is 750 meg per DAY for only $12 a month. which addes up to a large chunk per month! much better than other places that measures limit by the month.

10-12 days of retention is good enough for me. I used up that 750 every day pretty much....

I would say that they are a little worst then vhs. Sometimes you can get vhs quality and sometimes you really dark ones. It depends on what group put them out.

Anyone using them with dialup? I tried for 2 months and cancelled b/c I cannot get the new thread without being disconnected. Also the binaries retention time is only 4 days and with dialup, it's impossible.
Does the binaries retention improve any now?
Thanks.

I cannot get the new thread without being disconnected.

That's a totally localized issue, i.e. there's something wrong with your dialup or computer. Figure out how to keep your computer on the net then give it a shot.

Sucks bad lately. If it's this bad for another week I'm going to cancel before they charge me for the next month.

Newshosting.com 8gigs $10. Building up to 21 days retention, though it's not much of an issue w/broadband. For dial-up you can give them or giganews a try. Giganews also has good retention.

Yep. It really sucked the past few days. However, since I put the information of all their 5 servers into NewsBin instead of news.usenetserver.com yesterday, I am back to 2mbps and get all the files I want.

I'm using the east server and it's been ballz-2-the-wallz fast most of time I've been using it. I have been hoovering multi-gigs of stuff at work then going home and doing the same hehe. Back on the 5th I think they had a big problem and a lot of stuff went incomplete. Been fine since. I'm very satisfied with the service, it's so much cheaper than my old service, which only allowed my 1.5 GB/day. I killed that much HD space in ~1-2 hours today!

Yup, the trick is to use a news reader that can stitch parts from multiple sources. I probably pull in 90GB/month, so for what I'm paying, I can live with the little quirks they're having.

What kind of newsreader that can do the trick?
Is newsbin can do it?
