I was 'gifted' a original xbox, and about 7 games.
The power cable that came with it won't power up the unit, but another cable I have (old printer) enables it to power up.
I don't have a analog TV, so its uses are slim for me, and the 'hi-def' cable it has is also useless for me as well. Can't connect to VGA/DVI/HDMI, seems to be component only.

I am curious, is there anything else this unit can be used for ?

Ideas:

1. Gut it and create custom HTPC that looks like an Xbox.

2. Gift it to someone else. Obviously whoever gave it to you thought it was wasting space.

3. Stick it in a box and store it for 20 years until someone needs it for a vintage gaming collection.

4. Throw it away.

Personally, I'd either give it away and barring that throw it away.

Agree with all above except #4.
There was a time i threw my Nintendo away, Zelda gold cart, Atari 2600...etc.
Now when i look on ebay i has a sad.

There are also has been times when i purchased something on ebay that i once threw away, paying higher price than originally cost. I'd rather give such items away than just pitch them if their decent.

I can't see the original Xbox ever being an ebay gem. It's not rare enough, doesn't have any really special games and since every Xbox 360 can play the games...there isn't much demand for the system for old titles.

I gave mine away when I got a 360.

Gem? who said anything about rare gems? The consoles i mentioned was never rare either, but you can get some coin for it. Most consoles and games are really not rare at all, but some people like to collect them regardless.
There are always young kids who had and loved the Xbox, toss it then 20 years later they are not so common as to pick it up at your local rummage shack either, so they will look for them for pure nostalgia. Nostalgia is a huge market, rare has nothing to do with any of it.

rarity has much to do with it. Many of the old NES games that people pay a lot for have numerous examples that are missing the box and/or don't even load up anymore.

Unless something changed and I totally missed it, the 360 BC is a joke and can't play too many of the Xbox's games.

I personally kept my original Xbox for a few games, namely Steel Battalion and JSRF come to mind immediately.

Hmm, so you not sure if it works. When it does power up, does it stay green? Or flash, like a green, and red. Like christmas lights. Ill take it off your hand for some mulah if your interested if it works. Lots of uses IMO.

Was in a dark room, and no lights seen, only heard the fan.
I guess the only way to test it to see if it still works is find a TV that has component or composite inputs...perhaps goodwill ? Hmm.

Do this, and put XBMC on it so you can use it as an HTPC.

Unless developers have really cracked it open and worked minor miracles since I last used XBMC, the original Xbox doesn't have the horsepower to run 720p or higher quality HD video limiting its uses as an HTPC.

Don't think it booted then. Usually you will get lights on front power button, and eject buttons should power up aswell. Basic ps2 cord with rounded edges, just shove it in power it. But yeah, coinops 5 is all I have to say.

They updated the software multiple times and they have a list of over 200 titles that work with no issues.

Jet Set Radio on PSVita is pretty good btw. Got it for free via PS+

1) Honestly not efficient enough to do this unless you really enjoy SD content. Plus no HD content. A $50 Roku is miles ahead better.
2) Good idea.
3) Good idea.
4) 2 & 3 are better.

I meant gut it and mount a micro-atx setup within the case. Some low form factor cards and maybe a separate PSU. Anyway it was just an idea.

I sill have a modded one. I ripped all the games I like to the HDD. Not all of them are compatible with the 360. I have the remote kit, media center, and media player apps installed, and FTP'd a bunch of stuff to it years ago. OK for DVDs too. Doubt I will ever get rid of it until it dies. I already consider most of the games I play on it vintage.

Hell I am still catching up on some of the great PS2 titles thanks to having a launch PS3. Otherwise I'd have a PS2 slim sitting around too no doubt.

Burn it.

Xbox is the most generic, unendearing, disposable, and forgettable console there ever was, and every game made for it was a dime a dozen mainstream game with millions of discs stamped recklessly.. It will not be collectable at all.

^ this guy is rather humorous. He hates everything about gaming, but still finds the need to post about it.

Sure, the Xbox was awful... I didn't introduce modern consoles on HDDs, breakaway controller cords, Dolby 5.1 in gameplay not just cut scenes, and Xbox Live's online service. Clearly all of those are forgettable. Oh wait, all of those features are in all modern consoles now.

Note no mention of anything MEMORABLE, aka games.

Just generic anonymous PC junk. It will never be collectable.

Nobody is going to want a Xbox in their collection 25 years from now just to stare at it and think "oh it had a hard drive!"

They might remember it as the cursed console that brought to the console world mediocre PC FPS stagnation, rushed buggy games that could be patched later, nickle and diming DLC distribution models, focus on cheap easy vs mode online games while the single player experience has been gutted, and basically remembered for bringing us everything wrong with console gaming today. Joy.

Besides who wants to touch a used Xbox that might have been skeeted on by a 14 yr old worshipping Halo and Fast and the Furious?

You're right Xbox Live will go down in history as an awful idea and a failure... Oh wait, it won't go down in history because nobody remembers it!

And Halo 2 making $125 million dollars on release day is another thing I'm sure nobody will remember.

Again, we know you like games only made in 1985 that sold 5 copies. Nobody cares about your constant bitching people actually like some games and they sell very well because of it. You're like a hipster, but instead of crappy indie music nobody has ever heard of, you are all about games.
