Using a Hub for Internet connection???

Okay, one of my roommates recently got DSL and is paying approx. $50/month. Now I not too long ago got a computer and want to connect to the internet also. I see no point in paying $50 monthly, and I'm sure that's not the way to go. I've been informed that if I get a hub, I can connect using my roommate's DSL. Sounds sketchy to me.

you'll want a DSL router/switch combo like from linksys to NAT your machines behind the router, they will still both be able to route to the internet and each other though.

Okay, now I've heard of the Routing Trinity:
1. Netgear RT314
2. Barricade 7004ABR
3. Linksys BEFSR41

But if I get one of these, will my roommate experience losses speed?
Will both of us have different IP Addresses?

Any preferences from the routing trinity?

You'll have Local IP's. usually a 192.168.X.X variant and yes, the internet connection itself will still be whatever is was before, say 1.5 down 256 up for standard aDSL connection so you will be splitting that pipe when you are downloading from it. The routing/switch itself could cause throughtput degradation but it should be insignificant if any at all.

i dont have any experience with the first two, but have been using the linksys befsr41 4-port router since almost the beginning (alittle after they came out with PPPOE support in their firmware revision) using it for a Paclbell ADSL connection (PPPOE might i add) without a hitch. Never had a problem with the router whatsoever.

I moved after about a year of DSL.. 2 yrs down the road on dialup, got ATT@home. Dusted off the Linksys router and set it up and again, has been running flawlessly even thru the @home ----> AT&T Broadband transition without problems. the ATTBI transition itself was a headache (not the fault of my dearl old linky), but the linksys router performs great for me, and would recommend it to anyone.
