Using a printer server?

Right now my I have a Apple Airport Extreme 802.11AC router. All of my printers (one standard and one pro printer) connects via wi-fi.
Bought a Dymo 4XL and it only connects via USB. Would getting a print server solve the function?

I want to put the Dymo in the office and not directly to the desktops.

A print server is basically nothing but a computer that shares out the printer via some protocol (SMB, IPP, CUPS, etc). Your Airport Extreme is a computer and has USB ports with print sharing capability, so you should be able to just plug it in to that and set up the sharing.

Yes but the airport would be in another room, away from the Dymo itself.

Be aware that printers are not fully standard. When using 3rd party devices there might be compatibly problem.

Buy it from a vendor with no-nonsense return policy.

thanks for creating an account and answering haha.

Would the labelwriter allow me to essentially work over ethernet or wifi?
If ethernet I'd use a powerline connection.

With All due respect that is the current official mantra of almost all Manufactures.

This mantra while generated few decades ago with Good intentions is currently used to Squeeze as much money from users who have No knowledge of Technology.

As an example, one very known Computer hardware manufacturere sell Wireless Card or over $100 while the ame exact card cost about $12 when obtained from computer hardware vendor.

To insure the working of the "scheme" some manufactures even encode the BIOS to reject any card Not obtained from them.

I did not try Dymo hardware for this purpose hence my comment in the post above.

I think it's disingenuous to immediately jump to a conclusion that involves foul play.

If a company says that they only "support" a given adapter/accessory/etc, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the only part that will work. Instead, means that it's the only product which they can give you support on. I.e., if you use a non-supported part and it doesn't work, then you have no recourse through the manufacturer; they are not obligated to help you.

As someone who has frequently been in the position of supporting all sorts of random nonsense devices at work, the position above is entirely reasonable.

Well, the print server needs to be plugged in to the router with an ethernet cable and the LabelWriter is then plugged into the print server. The device can then be used by every PC that's in the same local network. So the PC's can be connected by ethernet cable or wifi, as long as they're in the same local network.

I think HP used to sell printer servers. Look on ebay or amazon for any used ones.
There are old print servers and new ones that also use USB/SERIAL

Should be able to buy them super cheap. Oh and buy a battery back up for the print server as I have had experience with many that when power goes out you then have to reapply the print server info to get it to work again.

I've been working with print servers now from HP and ZEBRA for about 11 years.
