using a wireless router/switch as a switch/AP

Hi all. I tried googling and came up with nothing. I am attempting to add a cheap 802.11b wireless router/switch to my setup, but for placement reasons (I want to move the wireless AP to improve reception) I can't use it as my primary router. To start, i just plopped back in my plain old wired router, and that is fine but after plugging the wireless router into the network, it grabs an IP from the wired router-

How should I set up the 2nd(wireless) router/switch to act only like a switch/access point? is it possible?

I tried disabling the dhcp server for the wireless router/switch, but nothing gets repeated up to the main router for IP assignment.

Disable the dhcp server on the wireless router. Assign it an ip address that isn't in the range of the dhcp pool of your other router. Plug one of the wireless routers lan ports into the lan port of the other router.

With all these good deals for free netgear wirless routers. I had to get one...

A Netgear MR814 Wireless Router and a Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router.

I have 3 computers hooked up via the LinkSys. 2 normal connections and a server that has all the port forwarding crap on and it works good. Now, I don't want to replace my linksys, I just want to plug in the NeatGear. Anyone know a quick way to set the netgear so it works with the linksys? I am sure someone here has done this.

I did hookup my computer to the router but when I try changing the IP to static it comes back and says it needs a gateway. Is that the same gateway as my original router? Also, would I need to enter in all the DNS stuff?

Thanks for your help!

Uthiroid you might double check to be sure one of your routers doesn't have an uplink port, or a small switch on the back to change one of the ports to a crossover, you might not have to buy the cable.

eirclp: The gateway for the wireless router would be the internal ip address of your linksys just like it is for every other device on your lan. It shouldn't need to contact anything off your lan though so as long as you put something in there it should be fine.

Also, many of these routers/ switches /accesspoints have mdi/mdi-x ports, which are auto sensing and never require a crossover. RTM and see before buying cable.

well, the wireless router/switch doesn't have an uplink port, and the wired router does, but that defeats the purpose of switching them- i need the antenna in the other room to improve signal strength where i'd use it.

So I think i'd have to buy a crossover cable of 30-40ft. do they make small adapters to "crossover" a patch cable?

part of me says ditch the 27 dollar wireless (techbargains strikes again!) and just get a "g" AP/switch.
