Using access point without a router

Has anyone ever tried this? I had an old AP (DLink DWL-900AP+) that I gave to my neighbor. I was able to get it to work, but in order to configure the AP I had to disconnect the DSL modem then change the laptop to be in the 192.168.0.* subnet. Once the AP was configured I changed the laptop back to "Obtain an IP address" and plugged the modem back in. The IP address was then assigned by the ISP, but I was no longer able to connect to the AP's web configuration utility (different subnet). Granted this is not a big hassle (how often do you configure an AP?), but if I ever have to do phone maintenance I want the procedure to be as easy as possible.
So the question is: Is there any way to set this up so that I can see then internet and the AP's web configuration utility? Perhaps windows network bridging?

Not sure if it is the same as belkin. On my belkin accesspoint, the gateway (ex: 192.168.1.1) is the Access point Configuration menu. So if you do a IP config, use that gateway and open it in your browser.

If you have 2K or Xp you can assign multiple IP's to a network interface. Leave the AP on an internal network and assign the second IP to your NIC on the same network. Typically 192.168.1.x or something like that. You'd then be able to have the WAN connectivity and the AP configuration functionality.

Awesome, thanks ktwebb. I did not know that you could assign multiple IPs to a single NIC.

I dont' know where your getting your information but you can't sign multiple simultanous IP's to a single NIC. You can change the IP but you can't have 2 IP's on one NIC at the same time. If your NIC has a public internet IP address and the AP has an internal IP (192.168.x.x), then you'll have to change your IP address to be on the same subnet in order to communicate with it. If the AP is going to be on your network, the easiest thing to do is just get a router, hook that up to the modem and then put your laptop and the AP on the LAN side, voila same subnet.

WinXP gives you this capacity: http://www.ezlan.net/faq#fewtcp-ip

You can connect one at the time to your Modem or the AP but not at the same time.

May be you should be more specific in describing how your envision you Network Configuration.
