Using an Old AIO Cooler

I'm currently piecing together a new system using a Ryzen 1800X (yup, I was tempted by the $300 price tag), which does not come with a cooler. I have a Corsair H60 that I purchased about 4 years ago for use in an unrelated project. I never finished said project, so the cooler has been sitting in the box sealed up all these years until today.

I'd like to use the H60 in my new build simply because I need to do something with it, but should I be concerned about the age of the cooler? Do AIO coolers tend to leak or evaporate off fluid such that they become less effective over time?

I opened up the box a bit ago and inspected the cooler for signs of leaking and found none, though I can shake the assembly and hear the coolant swishing around (I'm not sure if this is normal because I've never used an AIO cooler before).

While I'm at it, this should fit into a Fractal Design Define Mini C, right? I noticed it has elongated mounting holes on the rear which I assumed was to account for room needed by the fluid reservoirs on the radiator.

1. may have problems with the new AMD mounts for your Ryzen on a 4 yr cooler... and may require you to purchase the new mounts.

2. Most custom LCS systems are porous due to the tubing it uses.
This has been however changed with things like hard line piping and other stuff.
However Most cases in AIO's they use a type of plastic that is less porous then PET tubing so evaporation is less likely to occur.

3. The cooler should fit inside that case, however again, the ryzen cpu uses a new socket + mounting fixture that wasn't supplied 4 years ago. You may need to either contact corsair or find the mount option at a vendor so it can support AM3.

Ahh, so the coolant should still be present and accounted for, excellent! I'll give the cooler a try and see how it goes since I didn't see any visible signs of leaking or evaporation (such as condensation on the plastic packaging). Worst case is that I have to replace it with another cooler, in which case I'll pick up a nice air cooler.

Fortunately enough, it turns out that the H60 will work with AM4 right out of the box according to Corsair at http://www.corsair.com/en-us/am4-amd-retention-bracket-kit-for-hydro-series-coolers. It looks like the pump and base plate just hook onto the stock AMD fan bracket thingy, so I should be all set.

I've got an H55 that I used for years on a 2600k but now sits on an R5 1600. Works great but I did need to buy an AM4 mounting bracket from corsair for $5.00

Edit: I see in the text of the page above that the h60 doesn't need the bracket and should fit as is.

I wouldn't worry. Still have a few Antec Kuhler 620s and two 920s ticking away 24/7/365 for the past few years without issues.
No pump noise, still cools well, etc.
