Using Coolbits 2.0 to OC Geforce 6600GT

When I double click on this .reg file it doesn't give me anymore tabs. I only have 1 geforce 6600GT tab and then it opens up a bunch of side tabs with options. I think the Xtreme drivers i'm using has an overclock function (with sliders) in it. Should I just use this or still try to get Coolbits to work.

Also am I supposed to overclock both Standard (2D) and Performance (3D) to the same thing for both? Or should I only overclock 1 of those?

Also do overclock my video card 5mhz at a time for both Core and Memory? (first start with 505 core and 1005 memory?). Is that how you guys do it?

I dont know about Coolbits, but Ill answer your other questions.

Only OC your card in Performance (3D) mode. The extra power is not necessary in 2D mode, and itll keep your normal temps lower.

5 at a time should work. Just OC until you get to a certain goal, or until you start getting crashes/artifacts. Also, keep load temps below 75C-80C to be safe.

Maybe you could try finding your max core, then your max RAM (with the other put on default). Then try to run both maximums. That probably won't work, so just back it off a little bit on each one until it is stable... That is how I got my nice OC out of my 6600gt.

Well, I went up to 580 on my core and it still worked nicely and had no hitches when I ran both Aquamark3 and 3dmark05 while leaving memory clock on 1000 (default). Then I put core clock back to 500 and went to 1200 (slowly) on my memory clock and still had no problems running both benchmarks. Afterwards I set core clock back to 580 and left memclock at 1200 and ran about (5) 3dmark05 tests, (3) Aquamark3 tests, and (1) 3dmark03 test, all came back with no problems, no artifacts, no freezups. I guess I should just leave it at 580/1200?

Should I keep trying to OC it more? Under graphics load my temps I believe got up to the low 70's (70-72C).

What are your thoughts?

Good job! Try to let a GFX-intensive application run for an hour or so. That'll really confirm stability. If it's still stable, then I'd just go on ahead overclocking .

Ok I wasn't sure. I figured by the time I set it at 580/1200 I'd start to see artifacts but I haven't yet.

My video card is a Gigabyte Geforce 6600GT and I hear they are one of the best to overclock.

Get an Arctic Cool NV Silencer 6 rev. 2 to help keep those temps down. I am running a similar overclock (590/1190) and it dropped my temps by almost 20 degrees with virtual silence. Its well worth the investment to protect your card!

It is! I hope you can get an even higher overclock out of it, because from the looks of it, this core is fantastic!

It's hella worth it, and it might help you to get a higher overclock! Good luck.

I was told by several folks that I should NOT remove my stock HSF from my card because once you do on "these" cards it will never be the same. Some cards are ok to do this but the gigabyte's aren't.

Let me paste a post saying this from a guy that knows from experience:

joejccva, don't remove your Gigabyte's retail HSF because it's glued with a special thermal paste/glue!!
There is a site where the reviewer did that and couldn't get afterwards normal temps, He got 90ºc at load after that, no matter what he did...be careful!!
If you remove the HS, its contact with the GPU once installed won't be the same as before and you'll get very high temps!!

Hmm... Never heard of this. I'm not sure, but I think that's not a problem some good thermal grease can't solve. I'm not so sure, though.

Coolbits is for the drivers downloaded from the nVidia site. If you are using hird party drivers with overclocking enabled, you don't need coolbits. If you are using the nVidia drivers from the nVidia site, coolbits will enable an option in that side tab that allows you to adjust clock speeds for core and memory.

I recently bought a Gigabyte 6600GT PCI-E. The stock HSF came off easily, but the grease they used is actually more like a TIM pad - stiff and flaky. I got it off easily with isopropyl while still warm though. The key is to heat the card up and THEN remove the HSF. My temps with the Zalman VF700AlCu are about 10C lower than with stock. I think my diode reports too high b/c with stock it was idle about 60C...

I should also report that using Coolbits 2.0 I got a 584/1170 auto-overclock. Not too shabby.

Okay, after doing some mild overclocking here are some 3D Mark '03 results:

Stock: CPU 2GHz, GPU 500/1000

8032 3D Marks

Overclocked: CPU 2.2GHz, GPU 575/1150

9157 3D Marks

Not bad at all... I know I can go further on the CPU, but the RAM is limiting me
