Using drones to catch crooks = ok. Using drones to catch speeders = not ok.

Has anybody ever been issued a citation based on their speed being monitored by aircraft? I see the signs out on the freeway but always have guessed that they're just for show.

Yup, way back in college (late 80's). They had several cops lined up just coming into town picking students up coming back from break. I'm sure they made a pretty bundle on that. The aircraft times you in between markers on the freeway, calculates your speed, then radios the information to the cops on the ground.

Every time I drove back to college after that I looked for that damn airplane and actually saw it once. I drove like a grandma the entire way into town and sure enough, they had the same setup with a bunch of cars pulled over coming into town.

If it is a civil infraction; then why can arrest warrants be issued?

They cannot be.

The warrants are issued for the separate crime of either nonpayment or failure to appear. The warrants are NOT issued for the civil infraction of "speeding."

I know, this is pedantic and the practical effect is similar, but technically the warrants aren't issued for "speeding."

I thought that 25 over, (or is it 30) was a criminal offense in some states.

Drones? What a waste, they should in used in Iraq/n or some other ME shithole.

For America, just install a mandatory GPS device linked to the owner's credit card. The moment some criminal commits speeding, instantly charge the credit card. Increment the charges based on past behavior, make sure to add convenience fees. Send location data to local cops for preventive enforcement. Peaceful and law-abiding Americans should have nothing to worry about!

I thought there was some criminal charge in MN for driving over 100mph, I looked it up and it's 6mo license revocation
(https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=169.14)

I also found this gem
Subd. 2a.Increased speed limit when passing.

Notwithstanding subdivision 2, the speed limit is increased by ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit when the driver:
(1) is on a two-lane highway having one lane for each direction of travel;
(2) is on a highway with a posted speed limit that is equal to or higher than 55 miles per hour;
(3) is overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction of travel; and
(4) meets the requirements in section 169.18.
I could have sworn they taught us in drivers' ed. that you couldn't increase speed while passing. Evidently they were wrong.
Do other states allow increased speeds while passing?

Many states do have some statutory definition whereby exceeding the speed limit by X amount (whether a raw mph figure or a percentage) is automatically "reckless driving" or some other misdemeanor, and yes, those specific offenses tend to be properly "criminal." From the general context of the thread, however, I assumed that the type of offenses under discussion were the 5-10 mph over on an interstate sorts of "speeding" which is just going to be an infraction.

65 is a reasonable compromise due to congestion on the road.

Higher speeds start to reduce the margin of error.
DOT takes into account accident frequency, road surface, road conditions, line of sight, max congestion, lanes, medians and other factors when setting the limits.

You aren't seriously naive enough to think that they do that for all the roads everywhere, are you? Really?

I am against making it easier for the government to monitor its subjects. That BS may be fine in Hal9000's UK, but not in our country. People should not be afraid of their government, government should be afraid of its people.

If you feel a speed limit is unreasonable; put in a request to the local DOT for an explanation.
If you still do not agree; you can request a new review.
Records are not sealed; you can look at the way the reviews are done and the data collected.

Some DOTs will allow you to actually sit in on the proceeding.

Maybe this is a topic for a new thread, but isn't a ticket that arrives in the mail considered "improperly served" and can therefore be ignored? After all, there is the possibility of it getting lost in the mail.

This is, in many respects, no different than if the digital radar boards used (you know, the ones that show you your speed as you drive by) just spit out a ticket the moment you go 26 in a 25 zone.
Do those things take video, if they do that? It seems anything large in the other lane makes them read 20-30MPH higher.

How much revenue will it generate in revenue versus total cost of program operation?
How much do the drones cost?
Will it save lives or prevent serious injury?
No. Long yellow lights can do that. What busy intersections, OTOH, fail to have the shortest yellows in town? Saving lives is not the objective.
I don't know enough to definitively answer but if the program costs more to operate and doesn't save lives (or serious injury), then we've simply got an expensive way to harass our citizens.
And raise revenue that the property taxes aren't bringing in.

Dunno, but how are you reasonably going to pass safely without increasing speed, in a typical passing scenario (2-lane road with dashed lines)?
