Using Google Voice over Data/WiFi?

As far as I can tell on iOS or Android that Talkatone seems to work pretty well for making and receiving calls: http://www.talkatone.com/ Allows you to send/receive texts over data as well.(So does the official Google Voice app if you don't already have unlimited texting that is.) Also lets you voice chat with Google Talk (The official app does too) and with Facebook buddies.

I use it with the official Google Voice app (for checking voice mail).

Does anyone else use this same solution or something different?

I'm sure having a back up app to make calls over data would be handy in case one app has an issue.

Is there a method to have voice mails automatically downloaded? In case you entered a bad area for data and didn't want to use up minutes? Like some of the visual voice mail apps that offer it? Would you have to set the cell number on the phone to Google Voice mail? Would this work with Google Voice?

Well im on the tmobile monthly 4g plan thats $30 a month and its only 100 minutes unlimited text and 5gb of 4g data. I use google voice with groove ip. Groove ip is how i make my calls over data.

The lower your ping the better the call quality. I get about 3-5mbps where i live on 3g and my ping is low 60ms and my calls sound almost as good as using the cell network.

Groove ip is $5 on the market to buy but i feel its worth it. Ive used a shit load of minutes with it. It works on your wifi too which is nice, in the basement there is really no cell signal so i switch to wifi 12mbpz and calls are fine. The same with texts too as it uses data to send or reciece them.

How does GrooveIP stack up to Talkatone? Anyone use both?

I will have to give it a look. Another one I have heard people talk about is Sipdroid.

How does GrooveIP work while on the move? I tried Talkatone on the road and it seemed to break up a bit. My signal seemed fine.

Some people wanna try GrooveIP VS. Talkatone? Since these seem to be the two most popular for Google Voice.

At least with TMo here in Los Angeles it doesn't work well at all. I only use it at home with wifi and keep the 100 minutes of the plan for outside.

I've tried both over TMobile HSPA and neither worked well enough to use.

I figured out to config GrooVe IP just right for me. Was using it the other day over the data connection with no issues as well as on Wifi. Skype works really well too.

Here is how I have it setup. Go in the settings:

Goto Native Dialer Options: Under Built-in Dialer Preference select Always use GrooVe IP if you don't want to use your phones minutes.

Also check Native Fallback if you want to use the Minutes when the network is too slow or down.

Now goto Audio/Echo Settings: Select Echo Cancellation and select Basic and make sure Echo Tail is set to Auto.

For Speaker Volume select 2.

For Microphone Gain select -4.

Uncheck DTMF Feedback if you do want to hear the dial press sounds.

Goto Troubleshooting and select Mic Buffer and select Small.

Under Miscellaneous select Startup: Choose Autostart.

Also tick Allow Rotate.

Go to your native dialers settings: Under Dialer settings tick Enable sensor orientation.

Go in System settings and select Sound. Under System uncheck Dial pad touch tones. If you don't want to hear the dial press sounds.

It works well for me. It still doesn't sound as good as say Skype but it allows you to make and receive calls over data for only $5 or free if you only want to use it over Wifi only. I tried Talkatone with meh results in the past. I will tinker with Talkatones settings later and see if I can it to work as well as GrooVe IP. If anyone has any additional suggestions with GrooVe IP or Talkatone or any other app please let us know!

Because it uses your GV number which some may use? Talkatone is kind of the "easy" app but GrooveIP has more abilities. Either is going to break up with pings > 100.

i have since switched to csipsimple through pbxes with google voice number. quality has been better then groove ip, although grooveip was better for incoming calls (csipsimple doesnt stay registered for more then a few hours at a time)

im still trying to get my asterisk box going. pbxes works but its far from ideal. i think my own server with possibly a paid codec pack should be a lot better, and much closer to my quest for landline quality voip (like skype was. loved skype, but why pay if you dont have to)

How do all these VoIP options work between different network types? I imagine that if you start a call on wifi at your house, it can't just seamlessly transition to the cell network, right?

Otherwise are networks chosen by priority or something? Like, if I'm at home and wifi is down, it falls back to cell data, but say that's down also so it falls back further to regular voice network? Or do I have to choose the correct dialer for the situation?

Also, how does receiving the call work? Do you have multiple ringers ringing simultaneously because GV is sending the call to your carrier + VoIP numbers?

Do you mean going from Wifi to the phones data network? Yeah it should be able to do that.

Or do you mean from Wifi to the phones cell network? On Google Voice you can press * to change phones: http://support.google.com/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=115080&topic=1708125&ctx=topic
This is currently on incoming calls only. However if you are on voip call you could press * to have the cell ring and then answer on that.

I use grooveip on WiFi here in China to talk to family back home... it usually works well and the lag isn't really all too bad. It's nice cause all the data gets routed through their servers so I don't need to have a vpn running on the phone to use it, whereas google voice on the pc requires a vpn to get around the great firewall of China.
