If I buy a 1080p HDTV, and connect my PC using the DVI connection, and watch a DVD...

what is the maximum resolution I can get? I'm debating on whether to get a 720p or 1080p for use with my PC.

You'll be able to use the monitor at it's full resolution (as far as i know) but the DVD itself is only going to be the standard low resolution stuff.

If you had HD DVD or BluRay then you'd be able to watch the films at 1080P (assuming you've got HDCP compliant OS and hardware, or that HDCP isn't on).

Basically you'll be limited by the media you're trying to play.

Watching DVDs via PC is a great way to upscale. You can run 1080P and when you play DVDs they are being upscaled to the full resolution.

As for maximum resolution, it depends what your video card and TV/Monitor can support.

Actually, you don't convert to those resolutions but instead filter the conversions in the same manner you would sharpen/correct a photograph on the screen (in real time, which is why there's a heavy processor demand on the upconversion). It's more accurate to say you're digitally filtering the image so correct the problems of converting a 720x480i source to 1920x1080p output. The i->p conversion is the weakness of PCs relative to an STB depending on the source it's mastered from (films are progressive, television is interlaced source). So, to answer the question, the film resolution will never be better than 720x480i but it can be tweaked to give the appearance of higher resolution when displayed and 1920x1080.

EDIT: Sorry to bump an old thread, was just looking for my rapidly dropping tech support request thread .

You can do a basic upconvert from 480i/p to 1080i/p if your monitor/tv supports it. Doing so (just playing dvd at resolution of 1080p) is decent, but yo make it better, you will need real time conversion/tweak as mentioned. You can google many programs that do this, but first try FFMPEG/FFDSHOW.

Good Luck
