Using my Laptop HDD with my new Desktop Problem

Hey everyone

I replaced my motherboard, ram, video card, etc. on my desktop with new ones but still have the old IDE hard drives (haven't gotten a chance to get new ones yet) which are not compatible with my new motherboard.

Because of this, I've decided to use my laptop's SATA HDD with my new stuff to test everything out and see if everything is in order. But when I connect it and turn the computer on, I get a beep and my screen shows MSI MOTHERBOARD and then I get an error:

(A) I can see Windows 7 starting up (the beginning of the logo animating) and then POOF! - BLUE SCREEN!
(B) When I change the graphics card for my old one, instead of a blue screen, the computer just tries to restart at the start of the Windows 7 Logo like in (A)

Does this problem have anything to do with the fact that my laptop hard drive was configured to run a laptop and cannot suddenly be put into a new setup and be expected to run? Do I need to re-format the HDD in order to use it to test my desktop's new hardware?

Thank you!

You are correct: "Does this problem have anything to do with the fact that my laptop hard drive was configured to run a laptop and cannot suddenly be put into a new setup and be expected to run?"

Reboot and immediately start tapping the F8 key. You should be able to boot into the "Advanced Boot Options" screen and select the "Repair Your Computer" option. Let it boot into the Recovery Environment, select a keyboard input method, click next, click "Startup Repair". Windows will scan for problems and fix them automatically. No guarantees, but this is the closest thing Windows 7 has to offer that is comparable to doing a "Repair Installation" in XP when switching an existing system to new hardware. When/if you put this drive back in the laptop you'll need to run the same procedure again.

When done through tapping F8 and hitting the Repair button, I am eventually told that Windows cannot automatically fix the problem/I am given the option to send the info to Microsoft

These are the "Problem Details":
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 21200845
Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 06: 7
Problem Signature 07: NoRootCause
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID : 1033

I am now going to try to run it in Safe Mode but I doubt that that will do much

Edit: Yup didn't help. This is extremely frustrating because I have no other IDE HDD around to trouble shoot with, and I don't want to lose all the data on my laptop's HDD just to test my new hardware.

Yeah...apparently Microsoft isn't the least concerned with the loss of functionality that results from not having an XP style "repair installation". There actually is what Microsoft calls an "upgrade installation" for Windows 7 but first you have to be able to run it from the desktop using a full retail or OEM disk, and it only works on an "in place" installation. So, just be patient and wait for your new drive. Don't mess up your laptop over this.

Ok! I'm praying that it's just the hard drive because I'm going to be going back to school this weekend where I'll have access to my actual hard drives (I was using my old family computer back at home), and I don't want to find out that I'll have to return the items to the store somehow because they were defective

Thanks for your input Bubbaleone

Whenever building a new machine you should always re-install the operating system to avoid any software related issues.
