Using own router with UVerse

I'm looking at moving from Charter to UVerse, but have a question concerning using my own router. I have always used my own router and just either disabled wireless on the issued modem or haven't had a modem that has wireless built in. ATT tries charging $100 for a wireless gateway, which I'd rather not pay since I have a perfectly capable router. Can I just get the basic modem that it comes with and hook up my router as I always have with Charter? I've looked online and have gotten mixed reviews it seems. Some things make it look really complicated, others say just shut off the wireless and connect them. I'm guessing I don't even need to shut off wireless if they're making you pay for a gateway (makes me believe it's just a basic modem). Can anyone help me out?

AT&T pretty much requires use of their gateway with any Uverse service. I have a 2Wire 3801 with wifi disabled, and my own router for wifi. I'm pretty sure all I did was set my 2nd router up with a default IP in my 2Wire routers range, 192.168.1.50 I believe. It works, just takes a few minutes to set up.

For any of the U-verse services, you must use the AT&T supplied modem/gateway/RG.

You can configure it such that wireless on the RG/Modem/Gateway is disabled, and put something behind it of your preference.

You can also put it in "DMZ Plus" mode (for 3801 / 3800) which forwards all traffic to the inside address of your choice for use with other routers (it puts the public / external address on the "WAN" port of your router).

If you want to use just the Wireless features of another SOHO router, shut down the DHCP services on that router (using the U-verse box for DHCP) and connect a --->LAN<--- port of that router into one of the switch ports on the U-verse RG/Gateway. That will extend the U-verse LAN from the wired domain to the wireless.

Anyone notice the speed for their router sitting on the DMZ performing really slow? I've had better speed at 3mbps on regular DSL. I've tried 2 different wireless routers @ G and N speed without speed improvement. I've tried multiple configurations even no security on my wireless router with the same issue. I've attempted to put it on the same domain as the 2wire and off of it without any success. Any ideas?

I just installed VDSL2 service a few days ago, and the modem/router they gave me is the Zyxel C1000Z. To get my own router to work, I just set the ISP mode on the modem to bridge mode and then hit Apply. I then set my own router to PPPoE mode and connected with a PPP username and password. I didn't have to set up anything in a DMZ, and outside users can access my Minecraft server, WHS server, etc... through port forwarding. I guess a DMZ makes it so you don't have to configure port forwarding, but it's safer not to use it and to just forward the ports you need.

I will be getting FibreOP soon (So excited! Never thought I'd see that come here) and been reading up, basically it looks like the TV, Phone, and Internet are on separate vlans. The ONT handles the phone and converts to POTS and provides dial tone but the provided router handles TV and Internet. I think you could connect a small managed switch to the ONT and then assign the VLANs. Your router would plug into the internet one.

I'm not 100% sure though, I did not get the service yet to play with it, and don't have a spare switch anyway. I will have to do further research and buy one if needed. May possibly be able to do it through pfsense.

Typical would be for the three services to be delivered on three lambda (wavelengths), with one being "digital cable tv" on one, Internet and VoIP down on one, and Internet and VoIP up on the third.

The data is usually delivered on a fast Ethernet port, the VoIP is delivered to an rj14 port from the ONT internal ATA.
