Well, my idiot cousins just stared at me with their mouths open because they only knew the slur, and not the word that they should have learned in school. I literally didn't understand why they were looking at me like that & only realized what was going when my 80 year old grandfather in an exasperated tone explained to them what a dike is.
It's interesting how this happens. It's the same concept as how young people believe the real spelling of "ludicrous" is "ludacris", because that's how they learned it.
