I fail to understand how anyone with any common sense can think that they are "safe and secure" using their credit cards at work. I'm sitting here at my desk minding my own business when a co-worker starts talking loudly on the phone (to a travel agent). Later I hear her give out her 16-digit Mastercard number, the expiration date of the card AND the security code ... for anyone wihin earshot to hear.

Why?

Maybe she wants you to use it so she knows the kind of porn you like for future use.

People assume phone conversations are private, even when in a public place.

I don't know of any credit card in which you are responsible for fraudulent charges. So... What's the big deal?

Who orders anything over the phone? If I can't do it online or in person I am probably not doing it.

My guess is at work the phone would be safer then to use a public computer but usually you speak a bit lower.

There are cards that hold you responsible for a (small) portion (as llittle as $50 of the charge. My point is why would you want the hassel of having to deal with this? YOU are responsible for keeping your account information confidential. There is some work involved with cancelling your account and clearing your (good) name.

"Who's prepared to lose their job and get into legal trouble just to buy some crap with a coworkers CC?"

Suppose a co-worker just posts the CC number and info on-line (anaonymously) for the world to see?

Try getting a real job so you don't have to worry about scum bags that don't get paid enough wanting stealing your CC number. My coworkers do this all the time.

Attempting to keep your card number confidential is not effective security, because you have to give your card number to someone in order to use the card. Clearly it's not wise to spread it around all willy nilly, but what your coworker did wasn't particularly risky. A co-worker COULD write the number down and try to use it, but they won't. A co-worker COULD post the number on the Internet, but they won't. The likelihood of being caught and the life-altering consequences are an effective deterrent for most people.

Because some people don't live paranoid lives. Plus, I check my cc statements, so if anything came up I'd deal with it. Not a big deal.

Exactly. Maybe if I worked at Taco Bell I would be concerned about this, but I don't, so I'm not.

the people in my office are pretty trustworthy. i could leave money on my desk, leave, and be confident that it would be there when i got back. i'm definitely not worried about them overhearing my CC#.

This. You put yourself at 10x more risk by using a check to pay for items than you do with a CC.
