I used to be able to walk in, fill out a form and have all my mail redirected to my new address. Now they make you go online and pay $1 to have this happen.
What BS.

If you are changing your life by moving, what is another $1 expense?
Principle. I don't give $ for free, nor does it come my way as such.
That $1 fee may be the best $1 you spent. They mail you dozens of coupons worth hundreds of dollars in exchange for that small fee. Where else can you turn $1 into $50 or more that quickly?Principle. I don't give $ for free, nor does it come my way as such.

I've often considered pretending to move just for the coupons that you can't get anywhere else.
yes... totally BS.. how dare they try to prevent anyone from illegally changing your address without your permission.
The $1 charge is to verify the credit card has EITHER the new address or the old address, to prevent fraud.
Otherwise i could fill out a form, and all your mail would go to me.. and they couldn't trace it.
Ugh, okay you guys forget or didn't realize that this USED TO BE a free service. It was never something you had to PAY for. Whether it costs $1 or $50, when a free service becomes a paid service, it's an inconvenience.

It was abused as a free service - therefore they had to come up with a way to protect the integrity.
Yup. In fact, people were abusing it for the coupons.

POST OFFICE LOSES $2B IN QUARTER
WASHINGTON The Postal Service is continuing to hemorrhage money, reporting a loss Tuesday of more than $2 billion over the first three months of the year and warning it could be forced to default on federal payments. Such a default would not interrupt mail service to millions of Americans, but it could further hobble an agency struggling with a sharp decline in mail because of the Internet and a tough economy. The agency says the $2.2 billion loss covers Jan. 1 to March 31 and is sharply higher than the net loss of $1.6 billion for the same period last year. The post office also said it will have reached its borrowing limit, set by Congress, of $15 billion by the end of the fiscal year. Unless Congress intervenes, the Postal Service said, the agency wont have the cash for certain payments to the government, such as billions for a trust fund to provide health care benefits for future retirees.
