I used to be able to walk in, fill out a form and have all my mail redirected to my new address. Now they make you go online and pay $1 to have this happen.

What BS.

Last I checked you can still do it in the office. They just probably didn't want to deal with you.

yes... totally BS.. how dare they try to prevent anyone from illegally changing your address without your permission.

The $1 charge is to verify the credit card has EITHER the new address or the old address, to prevent fraud.

Otherwise i could fill out a form, and all your mail would go to me.. and they couldn't trace it.

[ Like Guyver beat me by a few seconds to say ] it's more to prevent fraud from someone else from changing your address, since the credit card charge needs to go through before they will accept it.

I've done it in the past without a charge, used to be a confirmation sent to the old address and that was all. Seems more like an easy way to collect $ to me.

If you are changing your life by moving, what is another $1 expense?

Principle. I don't give $ for free, nor does it come my way as such.
That $1 fee may be the best $1 you spent. They mail you dozens of coupons worth hundreds of dollars in exchange for that small fee. Where else can you turn $1 into $50 or more that quickly?

I've often considered pretending to move just for the coupons that you can't get anywhere else.

10% off Lowes when you use the coupon in the address change envelope.

That more than covers the cost of gas to get the envelope

Do not even have to move

Yea fuck convenience! I want to have to make a special trip do drive to the post office, sit in traffic, fill out a bunch of paper work BY HAND, and wait in line to give it some guy. Also, this must be done between 9 and 5.*

*Disclaimer: I've only ever changed my address online. Don't know what it actually involves when walking into the post office. But I'm sure it's less convenient.

Ugh, okay you guys forget or didn't realize that this USED TO BE a free service. It was never something you had to PAY for. Whether it costs $1 or $50, when a free service becomes a paid service, it's an inconvenience.

It was abused as a free service - therefore they had to come up with a way to protect the integrity.

There is a cost to progress.

Gas stations used to have people that would clean your windows and fill your tank for free.

Parking lots used to have people in small towers and yell out where there were open spaces.

Doctors used to come out to your house, not you go visit them.

Luggage carts at airports used to be free.

Air for tires.

Photocopies at the library.

The list goes on and on. You ever noticed an old man complaining about something costing too much. Because back when he was young it cost X amount.

How old are you? I just realized maybe you are like 80 or 90.....

they have no money
POST OFFICE LOSES $2B IN QUARTER
WASHINGTON — The Postal Service is continuing to hemorrhage money, reporting a loss Tuesday of more than $2 billion over the first three months of the year and warning it could be forced to default on federal payments. Such a default would not interrupt mail service to millions of Americans, but it could further hobble an agency struggling with a sharp decline in mail because of the Internet and a tough economy. The agency says the $2.2 billion loss covers Jan. 1 to March 31 and is sharply higher than the net loss of $1.6 billion for the same period last year. The post office also said it will have reached its borrowing limit, set by Congress, of $15 billion by the end of the fiscal year. Unless Congress intervenes, the Postal Service said, the agency won’t have the cash for certain payments to the government, such as billions for a trust fund to provide health care benefits for future retirees.

I think they should be charging more (for everything) considering they are $2.2 billion or so in a hole for the last quarter alone.

Edit: Beaten by FoBoT...see above.

The idiots at my USPS are sending me the mail for every tenant living in my previous address. I guess apartment numbers mean nothing to them.
