Every once in a while, I've had USPS leave a pick-up notice, claiming they'd tried to deliver a package when I knew I was home. Other than that, no problems. Never lost a package, never had one seriously delayed. Their tracking system isn't the greatest, but it's improved over the years, and realistically, tracking is nice and all, but what matters to me is whether the package actually gets to where it's going, more or less on time.
Never had a serious problem with UPS, but haven't used them much in the past 20 years. I worked as a part-time shipping clerk in high school (long time ago), and they treated packages horribly - literally threw them into the back of the truck. (I learned how to make a very secure package on that job.) Don't know if they ever stopped doing that. They can be a pain if you're not home when they try to deliver. Once had them return a package to the shipper early even after I'd called, confirmed that the package was allegedly at the distribution center and that it would be held for pickup. When I got there the next day, there was of course no package waiting...
I used to use Fedex a LOT from work. Things went wrong fairly often - misdeliveries, late deliveries, etc. The worst, and it was really bad, was when they misdelivered a shipment consisting of a couple dozen boxes of original documents being returned to a client. Apparently, they couldn't figure out exactly where they were in fact delivered, and were never able to recover them. (Insurance was of course irrelevant in this case.) We'd had the documents digitized on our end, so there was some record, albeit imperfect, of their contents. We didn't really have much choice but to keep using them at work, but I gotta tell you, I stopped using Fedex cold for my own personal business after that...
