Outpost.com has the USR2415 PCI Adapter WITH the Wireless USR2410 PC card for 39.95 after $30 manufacturer's rebate starting tomorrow, May 1, 2002 until June 30, 2002. The rebate link is broken but I suspect it will be up once the promotion period starts. There's shipping costs too, of course.

I just bought this a week ago from DELL for $85 and I'm using it to give my laptop wireless access. It's a good and cheap alternative to a wireless access point if you have a desktop or server that's always on.

Link to Outpost page with specs

Be kind it's only my second deal posting. =)

Looks good.

Today the price is 69. Is it going to 39 tomorrow? The rebates starts tomorrow, or the sale?

That's tempting. If you go to U.S. Robotics' website, a pop-up window tells you that they are about to come out with 22Mbps wireless cards that are compatible with 802.11b cards, so I guess that explains the rebate.

It looks like encryption is NOT supported on WinXP with this card yet... link

This could be a good deal with this (you have to get the access point today with a Blue Amex).

128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is non-standard. Only 40-bit WEP is an IEEE supported standard for 802.11b.

To make a long story short, there is no guarantee that brand A 128-bit WEP will work with brand B. I have Orinico Gold cards that do not work with Cisco Aironet 350 equipment under 128-bit encryption, however my Agere equipment works.

128-bit encryption is very possible with Windows XP - the encryption is all software-based. None of the controlling protocols are encyrpted which means stuff like denial of service attacks are not blocked. Again my Cisco 350 equipment works with WinXP using the Cisco ACU and ACS combo setup....

EDIT: did not see that you were saying 128-bit encryption was not possible with Windows XP for this card. .

Does anyone know what time zone their server is on? If we order at midnight EST and their server is on PT and records the order as 9pm April 30, that wouldn't be good.

This deal isn't just hot, it sizzles!

Is there a limit on the rebates? The pdf link given for the rebate is broken....

I have been using this card in WinXP with the beta drivers and Windows2000 for months. I use 64-bit WEP and it works. The card is good, nothing special.

Who cares!! WEP at any strength has been cracked a long time ago...if someone wants access to your 802.11b network, all they have to do is sniff for a little while in order to capture enough data to derive the key -- then they read all your traffic!!! WEP is NOT secure, be warned.

Just FYI, the PCI adapter is not a "standard" PCMCIA bridge. It is a rebadged Eumitcom WL11000P which is a dumb PCMCIA -> PCI bridge. In other words, no, you can't use it with arbitrary PCMCIA cards. The good news is that this should work just fine with Linux, FreeBSD or OpenBSD.

Hmm, I wonder if this works well with the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration? One of my computers is using a Linksys USB wireless adapter to connect to a Linksys access point, and it has been nothing but trouble. It worked flawless in Windows 98, but has been a major pain in XP. I wonder if this card is any better? Very tempting.

The PCI adapter does not work with other standard PCMCIA card. It will detect as the USR PC Card, so it really is non-standard. I just tried my 3com card in there and it didn't work.
