According to this link, Univ of Texas students can get XP for $5. Is this for real ? How many copies can one get ?

Hook me up if you go to UT.

I believe it will be true when it comes out down here. All other versions of Windows are, in fact, 5 bucks as are some other MS software.

You're allowed only one copy though as far as I understand.

We got one copy of every microsoft product for 5$ a cd, All the products have the same key, So I guess it some sorta of huge site license. I think all schools in the University of Texas system have the same deal.

I know that this was true for all other MS software, but I would like to know how it is going to work this time?? Are they going to all have the same reg. key??? That is the big question. That's why I went ahead and got it for $52 from MS!! If I get it from UT than great though.

As for how many copies!! ONE copy per person. They actually keep you on record. My sister in law goes to UT and she got 98se for me. She went back a year later and said she lost it and they told her she was SOL.

Hmmm... I wonder if they meant by the UT system, that is including Dallas, Arlington, San Antonio, and so on. Over here at Dallas, we've got some deals for MS softwater as I posted earlier. Hopefully I can get WinXP at a great price as well.

BTW, will WinXP have conflict with all my softwares???

Of course this begs the question... Will the UT copies have the copy protection built in to them (switching hardware more than 3 times) since they all may have the same reg key.

same deal for texas tech (lubbock) students.
kinda a screwy license - (at least w/ the copy of office2k i have) - you can only legally use the ms software if you are a current student - so if you graduate you are supposed to delete the software from your computer as the license is no longer valid. go figure.

All people withing the UT system can buy the software discounted. Students, staff, professors, everyone. Technically the agreement says you must destroy all copies once you leave the university system.

See the thing is the UT system sold out for something like $4,000,000 for this liscense. All the disks are made at your university. The UTSA ones are different from the UT ones. So when you buy, I believe the money goes back to the UT system, to cover the printing costs.

Here's the UTSA Link

Yeap, only one copy per person. They make you fill out a form with your id before every purchase.

I get the same deal. Its available to all Indiana University students. Any microsoft software 5 dollars per cd (so office pro is like 25 dollars since its 5 cd's). We can get visual studio, 2 versions of Office XP, any of the OS's and a few other programs like this. A good deal if you can get it. . .

Just my $0.02

You can get the major MS software products for $5 at several schools even outside of texas. The same deal is also available at Purdue (my school), IU and GA tech. I have the whole suite including office 2000, windows 2000, the whole MS dev studio and MSDN and will also go out to get the office XP and win XP soon for $5 each. There isa gotcha however. Basically, most of the OS's are the upgrade versions not complete installations. There is a separate CD key for each (unlike one massive CD key for the whole school). However, the license agreement says that you can only get one installation and when you graduate from school, you have to return or destroy your software obtained from school.

Now that MS has made if very difficult to install winxp on more than one computer, I think that you can write a note stating that you have 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop...and you want a copy for each. They should allow you to get 2 copies. Otherwise, you can get winxp pro full for around $90 at certain academic software places, and using any student id (friends, family, ect) you can get as many copies as you want.

BTW...is the pro version worth the differnce in price over the home edtion?

You can even get it at Pepperdine, a small private ringy ding school for $5. We just got ethernet like a year or two ago, so its not like technology is a big focus. Limit one per student ID though.

Yep, it's true. I've gotten Win98, WinME, WinNT4.0, NTservicepacks, Win2000Pro... pretty much any MS software you want for $5 a disk - can only buy one though.
