i went over to the minimum hardware reqs page and it said:
128mb minimum
256mb recommended
512mb (what i have, and game runs poorly)
1024mb (game actually runs smooth for me)

i'm getting choppy play at 512mb. it's not the usual kind of choppy play, but my keyboard/mouse will stop responding for brief periods. sometimes my character will just keep walking in a certain direction, or keep shooting even when i've stopped pressing the shoot button.

it's weird. it's like there's a buffer overflow in the game.

has anyone gone through the single player mode and experienced smooth game play at 512mb ram?

i put in an extra 512mb that my friend let me borrow, and that seemed to solve the problems.
really weird i tell you. does that mean ut2004 needs 1GIG of ram??

i have an athlon xp 3200+ (OCed from 2500)
radeon 9800pro

Hi, try turning off pre caching all skins in your game settings... Also go to Start/run/msconfig and go to services turn off ATI Hot KeyPoller and ATI Smart...this will stop alot of the hitching... also disabling your virus scanner, if the other fixes dont work... It helped me with my problems... good luck. I'm running 512 ram... It runs good now... Of course a gigoram would be sweet, but the above fixes cured 90% of my performance issues...

I run a gig.. I notice a large difference in the time it takes to exit the game when running a gig, over 512.

i have 512 and it runs smoothly after about 5 mins....it takes ages to load, then when i press fire to start theres like 10 sec delay then choppiness and stuttering for awhile as if everything is still being loaded....after that its ok

Yup, I've noticed that too since going to 1gb(1.5 weeks ago) in a number of games. With 512mb I would not only have to wait for games to unload, but if I had Mozilla running each tab would take forever(it seemed) to switch between, not any more.

same with happens to me on my setup, I too also have 512 mb of ram. The controls are really annoying. Hope they release a patch to fix the problems with the controls, cause I don't feel like upgrading cause the ram prices are too high now. A lot of people on the UT2k4 forums are complaining about the same problem.

I have 512 and had those probs till I disabled prechaching in game options. I hang for like 2 seconds after it loads then I'm good to go, no more stutters.

New games are definitely pushing the requirements to need 1 GB to run well.

It is pretty simple to tell. After playing the game go into Task Manager and see what the maximum RAM usage was. With the Far Cry demo it was ~650MB for me. Playing FS9 I have seen 750MB.

Dark age of camelot, Horizons, Battlefield 1942, BF:1942 with Desert combat, BF:V, and a few others can use over 1GB at max settings.

I finally found a fix to the mouse problem. In the sound options, set the sound to hardware 3d sound instead of 3d sound. It gets rid of the mouse problems.

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, there is a slight chance that your pagefile.sys file is corrupt. Pagefile.sys is actually hard drive space that is reserved by the operating system for "virtual memory" in case you run out of physical memory. If its corrupt it can cause extremely poor performance if not halt your system with errors.

Another more popular theory is that your hard drive is near full, which would also corrupt your pagefile.

You should be able to play perfectly fine with 512MB of ram.

Do you know what a buffer overflow is?
Just made me chuckle when you said it seemed like it was a buffer overflow.

I am running with a gig and it runs very nicely. Though with ram as cheap as it is these days, every geek should have a gig.

I seem to recall someone saying they were running it on their laptop;
IBM ThinkPad R31
Celeron 1.06 GHz
256 MB Ram
20 GB Hard drive
13.1 inch LCD Panel
CD-RW/DVD Rom

I assume he meant memory leak. I'm inclined to think something is up, I get some chop even with the textures set back to higher with 512MB.

On the demo, i load up maps in about 10-15 seconds with my Kingston 512 MB PC2700, though i hear lots of people are having problems with 512. Perhaps my 9800 Pro helps a lot. Still takes like 3 minutes to load BF1942 maps though =p

Ya Know, SugarKang. You can at least post back once to let us know we are not wasting our time on your thread here.

my bad.

when i got back from the store, i also bought a set of JBL creatures, and was really busy setting that thing up and playing with it that it slipped my mind to check the thread. yeah it's expensive, and a rip off but i love it cos it looks cool and matches my monitor.

regarding the buffer overflow... you're right. i have no freakin idea what it is.

i bought the pc3700. two sticks of 512. it got rid of all the problems. i could set the precaching off like some of you suggested, but i figure that i would be delaying the inevitable. i also want to be able to burn a dvd while i'm playing UT2004. side note: jesus christ memory is expensive!

before the memory upgrade, the game was about to start and you know how the announcer goes 3... 2... 1... PLAY!
well my announcer would go: 3... 2... 1... .... ... .............. ... ............ PLAY!

no problems since the extra ram. i get an occasional hiccup, but really occasionally.

the pc3700 didn't help at all for overclocking though. i traded in my pc3200 cos i thought the ram speed was holding me back on the FSB side. what's weird is that i'm completely prime stable at 210FSB for over 12 hours, and yet i can't play a video game for more than a few minutes. had to take it down to 205FSB.

thanks for your help guys!

well, i'm running a pretty phat system myself, but that's weird that having a 9800 pro and athlon xp 3200+ would give problems even with only 512 mb of ram. granted i have 1gb pc3200 ram, and it's smooth, but those other specs rock. damn unreal 2004, already running our lives!

With 512 MB and a 9500 pro I wasn't getting satisfactory performance. I bumped that up to 1 GB and it makes a great deal of difference.

With 512 you might have to disable a lot of the visual effects like shadows, which I tend to like.

nah u dont man...........when i was playing, for the first 5 mins of every game it was like playing a slide show, the HDD were goin crazy loading something up!! i turned off precaching all skins and some ATI stuff in msconfig and now the game runs superb!!!

the precaching does say u must have at least 512 ram....but we all know at least means itll work but itll work pretty crappy specially on PC2100

its to help online, all the skins are loaded so that when a guy enters the game with a skin no ones using theres no hiccups....but i turned it of and went online, and the only hiccup i got was when like 5 ppl entered a game simultaneously with different skins.....which im willing to bet isnt gonna happen too much in a night of play. if the odd one or two people join during a game....HDD makes a little noise, then everythin is fine....no stutters!!!
