BLOG - Epic?s Mark Rein has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament III will support mouse and keyboard controls.

And apparently you can define your games as M & K only or Controller only or mixed, which means the grudgematch of whats better will be able to actually take place! I think we all know M&Kb are superior, but I know plenty of console guys who claim the controller is better still...

Yep. And it's about damn time consoles got official support for K/B & M. I just hope it's going to start a trend.

That won't last long when mouse and keyboard users dominate the charts.

I don't doubt that K&M are inherently better (I mean, if you have a 1600DPI+ mouse...how can a controller even dream about competing against that?).

However, most console FPS feature some sort of auto-aim to make shooting with a controller easier. That sort of handicap can really give KB&M players a run for their money.

I am excited as all hell! I want to see if the graphics of the ps3 can compete with a high end gaming rig..

Even with those weak auto-aim systems, i bet i can destroy console users with better/more accurate defensive/offensive movement and just as good, if not better aiming. I remember when Quake 3 came out on the PS2 and i was destroying console users left and right with my kb/m and i didn't even break a sweat

Personally I wouldn't use them, but at least they let the controller players isolate themselves from keyboard and mouse players so if there is an advantage it is removed.

Ugh...not interested in KB+M. I was a die hard PC gamer for a long time, but with HDTV and these spiffy new consoles, I lost my interst in being hunched over a computer desk playing on a small LCD. I really don't want to be hunched over my coffee table with a keyboard and mouse. I want to sit back with my wireless controller and enjoy. Sure the mouse and keyboard are more accurate...but the controller is more than adequate once you learn it and I hate the idea of people having different levels of control. I would certainly join controller only matches...not because the controller is more accurate, but because I can lie back and enjoy.

As long as console players have the ability to stick to gamepad-only games, I don't see the problem.

With the release of Halo 2 for Vista, does that allow for cross-platform play? Those are the fanboys that seem to require the most M&K superiority lessons.

You do realize that you will be able to continue playing with your controller, right?

Nobody's forcing you to use kb&m

It's nice to have a choice. To each their preference.

yes I do realize that.

consoles are already becoming closer and closer to computers every generation. all this is doing is making it even cloer to becoming a computer.

I don't want a computer hooked up to my tv in my living room. if I did, I would hook up a PC to it, not a gaming console. console are supposed to be about everyone having the same experience and every console being like the other ones out there.

this generation alone we can see how much variety they are putting in the consoles with each console having atleast 3 SKU's out (PS3, Xbox360, not the Wii), and IMO, in the end, it's hurting consumers. I mean dev's can't even utilize the HDD on the Xbox360 because they have to remember some people have the Core unit still.

Atleast they are letting the people on kb/m and controllers seperate themselves from eachother. But even with that, instead of having say everyone using a controller in the pool of players to choose from to play with, now there are going to be less people in each pool to play with. All this is doing is alienating 2 sides of PS3 owners.

I agree...the option is nice and I like that they allow you to segregate your games accordingly.

Yeah, the minimum requirements for Stranglehold are greater than the minimum requirements for BioShock.

Link

# OS: Windows XP SP2 / Vista
# CPU: Dual Core Processor
# RAM: 2 GB RAM
# Video: Nvidia 7800 or higher / ATI x1300 or higher
# Disk space: 15 GB

Bioshock requires only 1GB of RAM.

I hope this trend of allowing keyboard and mouse and possibly even other PC accessories/controllers on the PS3 will continue with other developers and games. then I wont have to spend big bucks to upgrade my computer.

Why dont you want that? I just dont want to have to pay to maintain/upgrade two machines to be able to play all the games that I want. Up until UT3 Ive never even wanted to play an FPS on a console, I cannot stand the dual analog sticks because mouse/keyboard is a lot better and easier. theres also games like MMOs, and strategy games, RTS, etc... where mouse/keyboard is a much better interface then an analog stick or d-pad.

Also consoles are already computers. Computers that have been crippled intentionally to force consumers to buy proprietary accessories and software.

Yes they are already computers, but that doesn't mean they should turn into PC's.

I personally will never use a kb/m on my console, ever. yes it's more precise than a controller but I'm not going to use that as an excuse as to why I cannot enjoy an FPS with a controller. I've learned to accept it and learned to use it just fine.

If more and more games start to incorporate kb/m then eventually we will see some FPS that will "require" them in order to play. I'm not saying that will happen this generation or anything, but I can see that happening easily.

I have played a crapload of FPS on PC and i'm done with sitting at desk hunched over on a 19" screen to play games. And now I don't want to hunch over a table to use a kb/m just to play a game.

It also makes an uneven plaing field, and although you can atleast stay with controller people only if you want, having a split will just split up the overall playing field and basically it's going to turn into even more of a split audience now. you will have those xbox360 fanboys, the ps3 controller fanboys, and now the ps3 kb/m fanboys who will till the end of their time praise whatever they are using.

Consoles are all about having 1 unified system where no matter who's house you go to and play the system, it's the same as it was in your own home. You can just pop the game in, turn the power on, and pick up a controller then start playing. All this is doing is alienating that idea.

Were you against steering wheels when they were introduced on consoles?
Would you prefer if everybody raced using controllers?
