If you never participated in a clan or competed in a clan match, then maybe you should sign up for the next Major League Unreal Tournament (MLUT) competition and then you could gain a better understanding of what's meant by "cyber sport". There's even a logo for it! Follow this link to check it out.

Player signup is currently open for ML-CTF season 17.

The UT99 game play itself was excellent and near-perfect--so why should it change in sequels? The improvements in sequels should take the form of the trimmings surrounding the game. Chess is a great game and folks have played it for hundreds of years and no one complains that the game hasn't changed. So why should the Unreal Tournament game play change? It's less of a one-time-play RPG or adventure game and more of an online bloodsport where you improve your skills over time. People still play basketball and that game hasn't changed at all, so why should an online bloodsport like Unreal Tournament change?

If you don't know what I'm talking about...maybe you never played the real UT99...maybe you never played it in an organized clan match or pickup game match. Unreal Tournament is not a disposable computer game--rather it's an online cyber sport--so why should the game play change whenever an improved version is released?

Agreed. You can't really improve on the gameplay perfection of UT99. That's why I hated UT2004.

About the PUG matches, what time(EST) do you usually play? Is there also any skill requirement? I can play against masterful bots fine. I usually spend a lot more in UT99 playing coop and single player map packs, so I'm probably not as good as the guys who have been playing online since the game came out.

That's not really bad thing though...

UT3's gameplay is more similar to UT99 if anything. UT2004 just felt nerfed.

No, I understand what the experience is like - cyber sport is just a really stupid term for it. Especially the "sport" part. Video game continues to be much more accurate.

Most of those 33 hours were spent tweaking my setup. I bet I don't have 15 hours of actual gaming. My favorite of the series so far is UT2k4, but I'd rather play any version other than UT3. The only game I can even tolerate is IG DM, and I only play that so I don't feel like I wasted $60. I like 2k4 IG better.

As far as TF2 stealing UT3's thunder goes...That's a red herring. Why didn't UT3 steal TF2's thunder? Everybody points to other games, and says they're the reason UT3 isn't being played. Why aren't the other games being neglected for UT3? It doesn't take a marketing expert to figure that one out...

Did you play UT99? And why didn't UT3 steal TF2's thunder? Well first you have to know your history, TF was around before UT existed so a successful sequel meant a 10 ton guerrilla in the FPS gaming world. And TF2 is a successful sequel. It may not be everything TF1 was, but it's damn good and people are finding matches very easily over Steam as opposed to finding matches on the abortion that shipped with UT3.

I stick to my original comment, UT3s community will thrive instead of dying out.

im so depresesd. i really like this game and there's only like one or two DM servers around on the east coast. i really hope the community picks up or else im going to go cry. UT is the only twich fps series (eg. quake, ut, tribes) that is still around, since quake 4 was abysmal and tribes no longer exists... i'm so tired of realistic shooters (CSS, BF, COD... etc)

Regarding the PUG matches, in North America there's CTF and Team Deathmatch. Of course, the activity would occur during North American prime time. There's a decent amount of activity for #ut3tdm but not much for #ut3ctf (1 or 2 per night). Best bet is between 7 pm and 11 pm EST.

For UT99 CTF, there's plenty of action from 7 pm EST through 3 am EST.

Skill Level -- you should be pretty good at playing the game on a public server, but there aren't any formal skill levels. For UT99 I suggest #speedpug where you'll find friendly folks who might welcome new players. Also, you need to download and install the Teamspeak 2 voice comm program, which you can find here:

A lot of people have left the UT and Quake series in favor of more slow paced newbie friendly games.

If so, ggs

Yep, that was pretty fun.

I sorta sucked in those games though, especially heatray. I mostly play Warfare so I'm not too good at DM matches. Most of my UT playing time has been against adept bots anyway, just recently started playing online.

I play mostly Warfare too...just finished another couple hours of it

If you have even teams, on the good maps like Floodgates & Avalanches, wow, you can have epic battles

It's great fun...dunno how people don't find it so.

I need a little help in the single player campaign. I'm stuck on about the 6th level (or so) where my red-team must take over the blue-teams nodes or something like that.

Its like the third level of this type of game play, anyway, my team is getting freaking owned!! its the level where there is a bridge in the middle of the land and if you team controls that part you can get an extra flying craft (I think LOL)

So could someone explain the idea of this game? there were times when I had the node and went to the blue-teams area and then ran over their blue beam and I got a message saying that I can't do that yet...please assist if you can!! thanks for helping guys/gals!

What specific map are you playing?

When you have the orb, you have to capture nodes that are linked to your existing ones, or next in the line so-to-speak.

If the other team has a guy holding an orb on that same node first, you have to first kill him & get rid of the enemy orb before you can take it usually, as it "locks" that node for the other team, something that you can do also.

Sadly not only UT3 have small amount of people playing online, so is Crysis. At least Crysis can make it up with an explosive single player that is worth the price alone.

people just like realistic shooters, which are so lame.

cod 4 isnt bad, but theres nothing to replace face paced ut/quake style gaming nowadays... ut3 is pretty damn good, they just need to fix the damn interface

I think I know which one you're on, it took several tries for me to make it. The Kraal (or whoever) just keep coming in packs & you start out with that giant vehicle. I finally just got into deathmatch mode & fought like hell. After getting the bridge node I went to the Prime(?) node (the next one down-stream) & kept them from reclaiming it. they finally went down. Every time I tried to run from node to node I got beat.

To the OP, I think part of the prob may be what was eluded to in an earlier post that some folks play through a game before going on to another & play the single player for a while to learn maps etc. before going on-line. Maybe it will pick up soon.

I dont care if the game sucks or not. I wont be playing it.
2007 and early 2008 have had more than enough good games and good expansions to keep me busy.
I'm not gonna dish out good cash for a new title that isnt really new and takes a small step backwards in playability.

Regarding its not being new--so what? Chess isn't new either and people continue to play it. Likewise, Unreal Tournament is a cybersport. I know a bunch of folks who still play UT99 competitively and greedily because it's such a great game.

UT3's biggest problem is its user interface and server browser. Whoever made the design decisions to release it that way and whoever allowed the game to release with a featureless and barely functioning server browser should be immediately fired.

I can definitely understand why folks would be offended by all of that and not have any enthusiasm for playing the game. The UT99 community was actually pretty enthusiastic after playing the Beta Demo, but when they found out that the retail version was almost the exact same Beta Demo but with more maps and more game types, they lost interest in disgust at the pathetic user interface and server browser. They had expected that the Demo really was a Beta and that the retail release would be up to UT99 or UT 2004 standards (for its user interface and server browser). My UT99 friends laugh whenever I mention UT3. Some of them have taken up Call of Duty 4.

So, for those of you who do like UT3, why don't you like regular weapons no vehicles CTF? That was the premier game in UT99 and it was very successful. I'm guessing that part of it is a lack of good custom maps.

I personally love the new UT3 just like 2004 before that but I never actually played the original. Sure, it's mainly a graphical update of 2004 but thats great for me because I loved 2004 and this is very similar. I miss the addrenaline but thats because we mainly play the game in LAN's with bots and cloak was the best way to confuse the all-seeing bots.

We have only done a little playing online but even then we did not have an issue finding severs to play on.

As someone who doesn't like UT3, I can tell you why I don't like regular weapons. I haven't tried CTF yet(it's something I need to get on), but with regular DM the weapons are way too spammy. I quickly tire of the spam in a hallway maps(Deck being a notable exception), and I'll quit after a few games. I find IG tolerable, but I still prefer the movement of the 2Kx series.
