How about we quit paying teachers to sit in classrooms with students who dont want to be taught?

While we're at it why don't we quit sending kids who do want to learn to a classroom where the teacher is only working there because she/he couldn't think of anything else to do with their life and don't give a rat's ass if the kids learn or not?

If this is a good idea, then why is it a bad idea to worry about teens dropping out of HS?

I agree, I went to a Catholic elementary school from 1st through 6th grade where I struggled for As and Bs. My parents moved mid way during the year and there wasn't a Catholic elementary anywhere close to where we lived, so I went to public school. I floated through the rest of 6th through the 12th grade, making As and Bs without any real effort. I did my homework in class while the ignorant dolts goofed off, and I didn't even have to bring a book home. Senior year pretty much sucked as I only had electives left to take to get the needed number of credits to graduate. The last semester of my Senior year class schedule comprised of Metal shop, Plastic shop, Auto shop, AP English, and PE. I didn't take many electives early on in HS because they just didn't interest me and I took courses like chemestry, trig, etc., so it would have been nice to graduate early and not have to worry about stupid credits.

You sure you passed that AP English class?

it's time for across the board public school tuition. pay for your spawn.

That would have been nice in our situation, but not to many people could afford to send their kids to school then. We pay school taxes of approximately $2300, and $16,000 for private education for our kid. I don't mind paying taxes to educate, but it would be nice if I could get some form of tax deduction on the $16K I pay on private education because the public schools in our area suck so bad.

lulz, I'd also recommend dropping grades 1-6. Just have grade 7 and 8 and then put them to work in the mines.

There are dozens of stupid bills are the federal level, do we really need to discuss even stupider bills at the state level?

Maybe Utah should simply test all juniors at the end of their year for the ability to read and speak English, do simple math, and demonstrate how to send a text message. If they can, they graduate. Students that can't must enroll in community college so they can be taught remedial courses, or join the military, or go do missionary work.

IMHO, it could be a bad idea if poorly implemented, because Utah might ended up to be one of the most ignorant state in the US.

A student should be able to make a choice after 10th grade go on with higher education, or enter trades/apprenticeship work force. And, Utah should allocate a good portion of the saving toward community college education.

How many people did you know that took a year full of blow-off classes as seniors. If they want to, that's all well and good and part of the high school tradition or whatever.

The idea of goofing off all Senior year is totally foreign to me. My (public) school district had classes laid out such that you HAD to take certain classes/credit that weren't even available until Senior year. I guess AP classes may have had more independence and could potentially become glorified study halls, but generally there just wasn't room for students to pad their schedules with fluff classes.

In my case, this proposed idea simply wouldn't have been possible. I totally support the idea of trade/vocational schools though.

So instead of senioritis they'd have junioritis. Then they'd try to get rid of that. Slippery slope toward the republican goal of eliminating public education and replacing it with vouchers so all American children can go to parochial schools and learn about Jesus.

<----------------P&N is that way.

Most states I've lived in allow a student to graduate early, so long as they've satisfied the minimum requirements. In NY state, where I graduated, you only had to have 4 years of physical education, 4 years of english, 3 years of history (social studies), 1 year of science, 1 year of math, and one year of health class (total of 11 credits, since P.E. counted as a 1/4 credit each year), plus 5 credits of anything else (16 total) to graduate high school. If you doubled up your english class in your junior year, you could graduate at the end of that school year.
While quite a few seniors use their last year of high school to enjoy being the head of the school classes, there are some people that use it to prep more for college. But making it optional should be okay, imho.

American schools only have 12 years of primary/secondary education?

Anyway, I don't see the issue with this. Over here you're free to leave school from age 16. Lots of people leave to pursue careers in the trades (auto mechanics, chefs/cooks, welders, etc).

13 if you count kindergarten. Most kids nowadays even have two years of pre-school prior to that, so 15 really

Nothing wrong with that. You don't *need* a diploma to drive a truck, work on a car, clean bathrooms, wait tables, cook food, install cable, etc [do those jobs even list a diploma as a requirement?]. If the kid has no plans to attend college - then a GED will suffice.

Ahh "Trades". That's the word I was looking for and not "Technical".

I myself left school at age 16 and went to polytech to learn to be an auto mechanic. I studied for 2 years, got certified, worked in the field for a couple of years and found it unfulfilling. So I got my high school qualifications through the mail and went to university. But most of the people I worked with at polytech are still in the field and the smarter ones are making decent money. The world needs panelbeaters and welders and fishermen and I think it's sad that many look down on people in the trades.

If liberals hadn't turned schools into institutions of good feelings rather than the institutions of learning they used to be, kids wouldn't need as many years to get the basics down. Our schools graduate people who can't read because of the liberal agenda.
