torrents are frequently used by indie developers to get their stuff out without them having to foot the bill

what makes utorrent better than limewire?

i can use limewire to download all sorts of files (p2p?) and also download torrents. with utorrent u can only download torrents.
i dont mind that limewire uses a bit more ram than utorrent this should only be a problem for those using 90%+ of ram 24/7.

Ok, now that's over with, let me state that I did NOT mean any sarcasm. It was intended as light humor.

Regarding the issue at hand, I find torrents VERY useful. The ubuntu torrent in particular is a LOT more reliable than downloading directly from the canonical servers.

If you ask me, the legal issues revolving around torrents is similar to that of A-rated material on TV. On one angle, you can argue that the stuff is inappropriate for younger viewers and thus TV itself should be banned. What we have achieved instead, is a MUCH better state of affairs.

Similarly, just because illegal torrents seem to get searched for often, that doesn't mean torrenting itself is bad. It depends on how it's used.

I hope I've not been rambling here, it's just that what I posted was not taken in the meaning it was meant, and I'm a bit confused on where this discussion is headed. :roll:

could be that abou 96.7% of files on LW are infested with every virus/trojan/spyware known to man

The best thing about uTorrent is its size and function. It isn't bloated and doesn't use up resources like other torrent apps.
Its function is as a torrent client. It isn't trying to pretend to be a media player, pdf reader, and music collection program like all the others. Sometimes its nice to have a program that just does one thing. I hate how more and more programs are trying to do everything in one program. If I want a media player I will install one.

Started a torrent last night of a 655 MB ISO for a CD using Bittorrent and 12 hours later it was only 85% done. I had to ditch it or I would have missed my flight. Today, using UTorrent I got the whole ISO in ~3 hours.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm really getting annoyed with these all-in-one apps running around these days.

I'd say this is a matter of luck rather than the client used. UNLESS Bittorrent is downloading something else on the sly.

My preference is uTorrent. I use it in Windows and with wine in Ubuntu.

More seriously, slipstreamed copies of windows (at least if they are uncracked and still require a serial number), games you can not find anywhere (like Homeworld), shareware software, game mods.

uTorrent is pretty much amazing.
Not only does it take up FAR less resources than other clients, it has way more features as well.
I know I couldn't find a reason to use anything else.

uTorrent is amazing not just because of its low profile, but because it can be setup to run just about anyway you want to.

You can limit the number of connections to peers to make sure you don't overwhelm your network equipment (I actually had an old modem that would not only get bogged down and ruin everyone's internet experience, but it would flat out crash requiring a reboot). You can set it up to limit bandwidth (not just for overall, but on a file per file basis), prioritize queues, scheduling, where the files are downloaded to and then where they go once you've completed the download...and much more...
