Is there any reason to go with a SXGA over a UXGA other than about $50 in cost?

i think SXGA on a 15in screen is pretty small to begin with, but UXGA must be tiny. That being said I love the flexview on my 15in SXGA T42

If you DON'T like square pixels

(It should have been 1280x960 from the start!)

Most of the decision in this case is personal preference and real estate requirement, and thus no one can answer this query for another - other than to suggest that the end user find which resolution best fits his/her needs.

Good luck.

I can only tell you what I prefer. I program for a living, and I've found that SXGA+ works great at either 14" or 15" screen size. I have a UXGA screen on one laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8200, and while it is beautiful for looking at pictures, it winds up making it slightly harder to work. You can always monkey about with your font sizes, but some programs either look and work weird with large font sizes, or don't respect different font sizes at all, so you wind up with tiny little text. (I don't know what you do for work/fun, but one example is SQL Server Query Analyzer: you can set the font for viewing/working with text, but the left-hand nav is almost unusable on a 15" UXGA screen.)

I have a UXGA screen on my 15.7" laptop. I love the amount of space I get and the clarity of everything.

Get the UXGA. If the text is too small, just change font sizes. Or get a desktop theme app, like WindowBlinds, and choose a desktop theme that has larger fonts.

Getting a clear, sharp, bright, high-res is the best use of money when buying a laptop. You will be using your screen 100% of the time you are using your laptop, so invest in the best that you can get. Dell makes excellent screens, and Ultrasharp UXGA screens are excellent.
