I HONESTLY THOUGHT EXACTLY THE SAME THING....
modifying a bios, to talk to the mem,cpu,chipset... might not be as easy as you think...
so by "mislabeling the 1:1 ratio" it leaves the door(as you so well put it) open.
might not be any other way for the bios programers to do this....
to label and upgrade that specific set of codes to time the memory and cpu and chipset ect.
might have to be done from the get-go.
and then when intel "officially" announces the faster mem compatability
then we will see these bios changes.
epox might be a smaller company, and might have less to loose
i believe that it is asus that will put out the first double data rated ddr(quad pump)
and might want to abide by intels wishes.
hmm

Thought I'd pop in from my normal roost at the arstechnica forums and say hi.

Quite simply, you guys r0x0r. Leave it to you hardcore anandtechers to take my idea and tweak the hell out of it.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier - I had to nuke my box, and it was out of commission for a few days. Give me a shout if you guys have any questions!

One more thing - I've successfully tested using the 1003, 1004, 1007b1 through 1007b12 - they all work. Remember that if your RAM is barely capable of a given speed in another machine, it won't work in the P4B533 at that speed without severely retarding the timings, if at all. The P4B533 will either work rock solid at a certain speed or won't even POST. This was the issue I kept running into with my Crucial PC2100 ... all of my problems disappeared when I got my Corsair XMS3200. Now the cutoff point seems to be around 165MHz FSB/220MHz RAM, though I think this has more to do with my CPU than anything else.

I know I'm comin in late and the fires have died a bit, but I didn't get to play this weekend and it ticked me off, so everyone just pretend and humor me, k?

I finally get some good memory scores!! woo hoo!

I'm very pleased, I actually visually noticed a performance increase. Thanks Everyone!

Well I tried for the 3:4 on the P4B533-V and if the correct settings are off,on,on,on,on and on,off, off, off for the 1.6a chip, then it's a no go. Hmmmm.... this is with the 1004.7 beta bios....I still can try it with 3 more bioosis ?

Doesn't the P4B533-V already have a 3:4 ratio? You don't need the hack do you?

Nope, only to 132fsb. After that it has the 4:5 which is great for the 533 fsb cpu's but not for the 400's unless you can get your 1.6a upwards of 160 which mine won't do.

Ardy ~ with the recent discovery that the -VM board can now have the 4:5 and 3:4 ratios, i wouldnt be surprised if your -V board could too.
why not run some tests and see what you can find?

ill see if i can find some info - a few things for you to try.

LMK if youre upto it

Just tried it on my P4B533... works nicely.

I'm wondering if it has any affect on other components... like, if I select the AGP/PCI to 66.66/33.33... is it really that speed, or is it running at something else?

LazyC ~ i have been extreamly thorough - everything works fine as long as your memory is upto the task

there have been ZERO reports of any problems or oddities.

I'm almost done testing and will post all my results shortly, I just wanted to throw this out there....it appears that on the P4B533-E boards (at least mine), the ratio in the bios is not misrepresented. If you put it on 1:1, that's what you get. Will confirm shortly.

??!?

I found this trick using my P4B533-E. I wonder what's going on with your guys' -E's? I know that mine works fine, and that the P4B533-E that Ed @ overclockers.com tried it on works fine as well.

You can check out my sandra screen shot by going back to the oc-forums thread this originated from. (150MHz, 3050/3026, 2-2-3-6, 512MB Corsair XMS3200)

Let me know what else you guys find out.

EDIT: You guys are right in observing that 150 3:4 does NOT work at 2-2-2-5. It absolutely doesn't, no matter what kind of memory you have. However, mine seems to be running stable (complete install of XP, ~3 days of FAH) at 2-2-3-6. Any timing faster than that refuses to POST.

Alright, strike that last post, I've been at this all day and I think I'm goin a little batty. Anyway, here's the deal, and I've confirmed this:
No ratio hack/below 133MHz FSB:
the ratios are 1:1 and 3:4, what you see is what you get.
No ratio hack/133MHz FSB and above:
the ratios are 1:1 and 4:3, what you see is what you get.
With ratio hack/below 133MHz FSB:
the ratios are 1:1 and 3:4, what you see is what you get.
With ratio hack/133MHz FSB and above:
the ratios are 1:1 (3:4 actual) and 4:3 (1:1 actual).

Anyone want to confirm this, that would be great.

I am convinced that this 'mis' labeling of ratios over 133 is truely , as nanomem put it ,a soft lock in the bios... which can be changed

i believe it is about 1 year when asus stops upgrading the bios chips, on a particular board
does that sound about right?
