V2.00 and newer PSU question.

Title says it all. A friend of mine had his PSU die on him and is in the market for a new power supply. All the PSU's he found are 20+4 pin ATX V2.00 or newer with the 20+4 motherboard connector. He is running a older XP1800+ system that only has the 20 pin motherboard connector with no SATA or PCI-E.

I told him I am fairly certain the newer power supplies will work on his computer but that I do not have a definitive answer as I never used a new one on a old system. So before he dishes out $40 for a new power supply, he wants to know for certain if they will work. Any of you have a new V2.0 or newer PSU running in a old system?

Yes the newer PSUs will work on your friend's system. Most times the last for pins willdetach from teh main connector. If not theyu can just hang off to the side.

If it's a 20+4 arrangement, just don't use the +4 and it should be fine. The biggest issue with the 24-pin PSUs is to make sure you don't plug in the +4 pin plug into the +12V socket (which is also 4 pin)... bad things will happen if you do

The 20+4 connectors are specifically designed to break apart and yield an old-syle 20-pin connector. The greater concern would be making sure the supply has an adequate 5 V rail, if his board runs the processor from that rail (doesn't have the 4-pin "ATX12V" connector).
