VA Linux 1221 Hot Deal?

Alright, this is not a Hot Deal unless you want a 1U linux server with good support. VA linux seems to be selling their 1U dual processor, 18.3 gig 10k SCSI systems for $1300. Good deal? Not really. BUT....check out the memory upgrade. Upgrade from 512mb to 2gb for $105. So, for around $1400 you can get a good linux server with support from VA linux with 2gb of ram. Not too shabby.

Alright, please don't flame this deal because it is not that good of a price compared to Gateway. Simply take it as a good deal from VA linux.

Actually this is a great deal. Its hard to find hot deals on rackmountable servers.

Not a bad deal for a company that is dropping thier hardware Dept.. Final orders are early July.
I would not count on good support after July..

The memory pricing is amazing, especially considering the same upgrade (512 to 2GB ECC) costs $870 on the 2200 series! I suspect an error, and wonder whether they will honor it. Anybody call them? If they honor the price this is a great deal.

Also, this is better than the Gateway deal if you take both to 2GB RAM.

Gateway 6400 with 1 933PIII is $500
4 X 512 ECC PC133 (from Crucial or the like) is about $750
Total = $1250 Total

VA Box with 1 866PIII and 2GB RAM = $1158

BUT...Whereas the Gateway server can be easily converted to
home/personal use (assuming you can stand the noise), a 1U
rack server is really poorly suited for that purpose. Not only
is it not physically suited for most individual's purposes,
but it also offers extremely limited upgrade possibilities...
Generally, you get few/no PCI slots, a limited number of drive
slots, and 1 CDrom slot which may (depending on configuration)
be limited to a slimline CDrom.

Excellent deal for companies setting up a linux cluster, not too
exciting for the average Joe.
